33. I respect the work that PETA does |
|
even if I don't always agree with their execution.
I've seen horrific things going on in this world in respect to animal abuse, and it hurts me inside to see it, or to know that it's there.
PETA resorts to ludicrous behavior sometimes because some people can't do the introspection it requires to be more compassionate toward animals. They need to be hit over the head with a sledgehammer, and that's what PETA does in its own way.
If you see an animal in distress, or in pain, or being harmed in some way, your reaction is likely guided by PETA in an indirect fashion--they make the noise we all would like to think we're doing, but never actually do.

36. I have seen animals in |

pain, and I didn't need PETA to influence my actions. Case in point. At about 11 years old, I hit a rabbit with my bike. I brought it home, built a pen, and tried to take care of it, to no avail. I had to leave when my father put it out of it's misery.

What about many of those who never even thought about an animal's welfare over the course of their time working with animals?
Did you know that the founder of the ASPCA was motivated by seeing a handler beating his collapsed horse? It is only reasonable to assume that there have been many people throughout history who have had the insight to care as much about animals as they do for people. BTW: Henry Bergh, the founder of the ASPCA, also established the same kind of organization to protect children.
We are still, unfortunately, at a point where animals are still being abused, tortured, maimed and killed, and we still need to be reminded of that fact.
If you have "gotten the message" through your life, you should be able to see why some don't get it, no matter how much they are reminded. It is these idiots that PETA hopes to provoke into learning compassion. And if that means running really strange campaigns, that's okay--as long as the target audience gets the message.

53. They're good at getting attention... |
|
But they're also good at reinforcing the stereotype that anyone working to improve animal welfare is a deranged uber-hippie. Over-the-top circus freakery gets you in the papers, but it'll never convince Joe Sixpack to take your ideas seriously. Quite the opposite, in fact.

39. I voted that I think PETA people are nuts but it's more than that |
|
I know they have the best interests of animals at heart, and god love 'em for caring.
I love animals myself.
but what pisses me off about those people is that their methods make a total mockery of their cause...often to the detriment of the very lives they're trying so desperately to save.
the poor stupid fuckers really need to tone it down some if they want their message to penetrate

I'm glad somebody is out there advocating for animals. Some of their views don't make sense to me, but a world where somebody is committed to animal welfare is better than a world where no one is.
