Who agrees that it's just a waste of time and energy to demand an apology from someone |
|
An apology given only because it was forced isn't an apology (especially if the offender isn't really sorry). Apologies should be offered willingly and even then only if they are sincere...otherwise, why the fuck bother?

AND a recommend (I don't give those often).
It's almost as if the offended party doesn't much care about remorse or apologies. They just like the idea of seeing their adversary squirm on TV in a public shaming.

3. Why do parents almost universally insist on insincere apologies from their children? |

I do agree that an apology, sincere or not, isn't worth the paper its written on.

sometimes people have to be shown how hurtful what they said and did actually was, and decent people may have a change of heart and apologize

7. I'm not saying the insulted or hurt party can't express their displeasure at the words or deeds. |
|
of the offending party but to say "I demand an apology" is just well, senseless. If they're sorry they'll say it willingly. I think it's a power trip for some people to demand an apology. But if the person isn't really sorry and is still going to be an insensitive asshole, what's the point? Do you think if Rush Limbaugh apologized to Michael J Fox anyone would believe it was sincere in the least?

6. Apologies are for children. |
|
Forcing someone to say they're sorry when they really aren't is a lesson for a 5 yr old, but is a waste of time for a grownup.

8. I think if there were, for example, a Congressional resolution |

to make someone give an apology for something not especially greivous, like, I dunno, stating his opinion, that would would be a pretty big waste of time.

You can make them SAY they're sorry, but it's 99.99% of the time a lie when they do apologize.

10. Yes, demanding an apology misses the whole point. |
|
Either they want to apologize or they don't. Either they will or they want.
Demanding an apology is often done by the person who should be doing the apologizing, too.
Far too often, it's the perp rather than the victim who demands an apology. Look at the GOP and their mouthpieces. They constantly demand an apology for all sorts of imaginary wrongs.
