Gates house.
Does anyone know if his residence is being provided free of charge, in lieu of a partial pay cut, paying minimal rent, or is it a perk provided to someone with CEO type status?

And before anyone goes off on me... it has nothing to do with the current situation.

I'm just curious about his (and other influential college professors), living arrangements.

1. I married a college professor,
and we lived in a college-owned house. We paid minimal rent, and all the upkeep was provided by the school.

It's sort of a break some of the more senior faculty get.

Ours was a gorgeous old, ante-bellum four-bedroom colonial. Quite lovely. We got married there, and had our reception on the big lawn - mowed by Maintenance....................

2. I don't think there are rules.
As far as I know most college professors do not get houses paid for by the Universities.
So I have no clue as to what deal Dr. Gates had with Harvard.

3. Some super senior or dept chairs are offered housing, mostly in older schools that have it
There is practically none of that at newer schools...I certainly have my own

4. It's "faculty housing." He's a department head, occupying an influential chair.
Gates is a wealthy man, though. He has a home on the Vineyard.

Harvard, as a rule, charges "market rents" for its housing. This applies to students as well as faculty.

Since Gates occupies a "chair," if it is an "endowed" chair, the endowment may very well pay the rent...or it may be deducted from his pay, or he may just pay the rent monthly to the Real Estate Service.

See here: http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2009/02.05/11-hres.html

Also here: http://www.facultyrealestate.harvard.edu/leasing.htm

You'd have to ask him for the details, though--I don't think anyone's put out what arrangements he has made. He was on the phone to the property management people when the policeman arrived at his door, though.

6. It varies from University to University
My father was a department chair for many years at a private university. He never received free or reduced housing as a benefit. He did get other perks though - - the best one was the tuition exchange for his dependents. His dependents (me & my siblings) could attend a small number of colleges, tuition free. We had to pay all the other costs - - housing, food, books, special class fees, transportation, etc., etc., etc. But it was a great perk.
