Arm the Senate!
By E.J. Dionne Jr.
Monday, July 27, 2009

Isn't it time to dismantle the metal detectors, send the guards at the doors away and allow Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights by being free to carry their firearms into the nation's Capitol?

I've been studying the deep thoughts of senators who regularly express their undying loyalty to the National Rifle Association, and I have decided that they should practice what they preach. They tell us that the best defense against crime is an armed citizenry and that laws restricting guns do nothing to stop violence.

Congress seems to think that gun restrictions are for wimps. It voted this year to allow people to bring their weapons into national parks, and pro-gun legislators have pushed for the right to carry in taverns, colleges and workplaces. Shouldn't Congress set an example in its own workplace?

<snip>

In other words, keeping guns out of the Capitol makes all our elected officials far less safe. If just a few senators had weapons, the criminals wouldn't know which ones were armed, and all senators would be safer, right? Isn't that better than highly intrusive gun control -- i.e., keeping people with guns out of the Capitol in the first place?

Interesting column about logical consistency.

3. Speaking of logic
Should we only allow the government (cops, firefighters, military, etc and so on ) to have guns?

There is a difference between who can have them and where.

I AGREE with this article and it's premise - those in power fear guns near them but not others.

But one must also ask, is it that simple? People in national parks don't have an axe to grind with you or I, but they may well have in the capital.

I think there is something called common sense to deal with and sheer statistics.

I guess it all comes down to one question for people:

Whom do you trust with guns - the government (ala bush and his folks, etc) or everyday people?

For me, I have learned not to trust the government.

4. Gun restrictions are for parties that like the wilderness
I bet DU is close to 50/50 on guns which should tell you something about Democrats as a whole, and ring loud and clear for the view of the country as a whole.

Non gun owners are possibly in the minority in this country, people for any significant gun control certainly are.

You also must surely admit that members of Congress, particularly the Senate, are legit assassination targets, unlike you having a hike in the Forest or at work. This is not legal inconsistency but stretched logic on the part of the writer. Setting up a shooting gallery in the Capital with those who gather enemies with each vote is in no way similar to normal daily life.
