Haven't seen a single one of these "recommend this if you agree" posts since its inception! Yay!

Not many, admittedly.
Still think it sucks. Never used it. Never will.

Anonymity allows the inner Freeper to run free without consequence. Certain topics get a lot of unrecs. You don't have to totally avoid "those topics" anymore. Now, you can smack an unrec on there and register your disapproval without risking rebuke from other DUer's.
A better (but possibly less interesting) system would build a list of names who rec'd and unreced, and allow the user to click a link to see that list.

If I read a post and it sucked, I like to help the next guy by keeping it off the greatest page, at least, which is a small thing, but helpful to our community. And if we all do our parts, the greatest page will truly actually be the greatest of DU.
It's kind of a pay it forward deal, where we get to help out our fellow DU'ers by saving them the trouble of thinking something really was the greatest only to find a dead squib.
I guess I'm saying it keeps the duds out of the greatest page, most of them anyway, so that more important stuff can be more easily located there.
And anyone who stumbles on the thread outside the greatest page, well, they can experience the excitement all by them selves. It's a win-win for everyone.

5. I happily admit I unrec'ed an MJ thread with 5 recs today. |
|
And I'll friggin' do it again!
If that means my "inner freeper" is running free without consequence, so be it.

You did the right thing. Your peers thank you, as I do.

11. There's no anonymity where it counts, though. |

Malicious unreccers have had their rec/unrec privileges suspended.
You do realize the admins can see how you vote in polls, and what threads you rec and unrec?
It's their board, we're just happy guests of the establishment.
If the admins wanted to be Kos, with their clunky navigation and peer pressure/groupthink plus and minus recommendations, I imagine that's what they would do. But what purpose is served by further hurting people's feelings by giving them a list of precisely who thinks their dumb idea sucks?
It's enough to nudge them to not expect crapola posts to wind up on the GP--which only took five cronies, or five sockpuppets, to make happen before. Now, there's a quality requirement.
It makes the GP a good read, too.

And, of course, the right thing to do because the OP is surely not one of the greatest! Thanks for contributing to the community, partner, let's continue to do our best for our fellows.

14. Except it's not at all like that |

Specious argument. Since here, the different opinion is there for all to see and is not censored or withheld due to an unrec.
