Suggestion to mods: Please allow us to hide threads without having to click inside.
Often these threads contain offensive and/or violent commentary/images. The thread titles are usually, but not always, a dead give-away. Currently, the only way we can hide them is to click into them, thereby exposing ourselves to horror shows we would rather avoid.

1. The X box at the end of the heading string will do that

2. That puts the author on ignore.
Yes, it also hides the thread, but I don't always want to put the author on ignore. I currently have nobody on ignore. Just because somebody posts something, that may be otherwise informative, but is offensive to me, doesn't mean I don't want to see their other posts.

3. No, it does not put the author on ignore...
all it does is hide that one thread, that's it.

4. The red X?
Put your mouse over it without clicking. It says "put this author on ignore."

5. Not that x... the small black x in a box that appears after the thread title...
in the forum... not in the thread.

11. I found it! Thanks!
Glad I asked the question, cause after all these years I did not know! Maybe others are in the same boat.

17. My pleasure of course!
And yes, anyone how hasn't seen the need to use it much might very well be unfamiliar.

6. Look at the subject line of your OP. Next to it you will see an X in a box.

Clicking on it will hide the thread, not ignore the author.

7. If you don't like the thread title, don't open the thread. . .
but if the title gives no indication the content will be objectionable, how are you going to know you will disapprove without opening it?

12. A lot of times the title is so offensive that I don't want to see even it.
But I have now found out how to hide the thread without clicking on it. Thanks to redqueen! :yourock:

18. That makes sense . . .
glad you found what you wanted . . .

(I wish there were some way to globally block certain subject lines, so with one click you could free yourself of all Michael Jackson threads or any topic that contains words which you'd prefer not to be subjected to.)

9. Is there a page of features for DU? I've been hiding threads via X box for yrs
People who have been here for 6 yrs don't know how to do this? Wondering if there is a page of "how to work DU" or some such for those who don't know how to hide threads, ignore posters, etc etc.

15. Another suggestion to the mods: Switch the Recommend & Unrecommend hypertext.
I think I may have unrecommended by accident because the Unrecommend is generally where the Recommend used to be.

16. Of course, the 'Un' is invisible, right?
Long ago, I stopped clicking on anything without reading it. If it's a link, I read the information in the status line of my browser, too, before clicking. Haven't been rickrolled for a long time now.

As the slogan goes, Reading is FUNdamental.

19. A hint for visiting web sites:
Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 01:47 PM by MineralMan
When you see something on a web site you don't understand, hover the mousepointer over it. Most modern websites offer hover text to tell you what will happen if you click an object.

Here, hovering over that little x in the box tells you that clicking it will block that thread from your view.

Further, there is a Help button on the top line of most pages here. Clicking it takes you to an interesting FAQ page. One of the questions on that FAQ page is "How do I hide a thread?" The answer tells you to click the little x in the box. Amazing that all that information exists and can be browsed when you have a question. Many sites offer similar FAQs.

A little curiosity and mousing around can answer most of your questions about most web sites. Taking the time to examine web pages carefully can teach you many things.
