Ron Paul says health care is not a right and shouldn't become one
Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 03:35 PM by LuckyTheDog
From Ron Paul:

First of all, other people must pay for things like healthcare. Those people have bills to pay and families to support, just as you do. If there is a "right" to healthcare, you must force the providers of those goods, or others, to serve you.

Obviously, if healthcare providers were suddenly considered outright slaves to healthcare consumers, our medical schools would quickly empty. As the government continues to convince us that healthcare is a right instead of a good, it also very generously agrees to step in as middle man. Politicians can be very good at making it sound as if healthcare will be free for everybody. Nothing could be further from the truth.

More stupidity here: http://www.campaignforliberty.com/article.php?view=144

This is such nonsense on so many levels. But this is what really irks me, because I have heard it repeated so many other places: Universal health care will absolutely NOT turn doctors into slaves. That idea drives me nuts.

If anything, Universal health care will make them a protected class. Their customers will be guaranteed a right to their services and society will make sure that the doctors get paid. No other service providers -- mechanics, plumbers, etc. -- are being offered a guaranteed pool of paying customers.

Imagine if we decided to grant everyone a right to potato chips and organized a system to make sure the chips were paid for through taxation. Would Frito Lay fight against that, even if the company had to sell each bag for less money than it does now? I doubt it.

13. Welcome to DU. Rememeber one thing: Blue Cross Dems would have no power
if the Repubs were not a mindless block of obstruction.
I grew up in a day when crossing the aisle was common. Today a republican will never vote for any Democratic sponsored bill.
So while I am mad as hell at the Blue Cross Dems, I am even madder at the 40% mindless NO votes on every bill. Doesn't take a lot of work to find another 10% in order to stop governemnt.
Without a base of dumbfucks, the Blue Cross Dems would be powerless. Fuck them mindless repugs.

29. Ron Paul's campaign manager died with major debts and no health care
Libertarian Legacy? Ron Paul's Campaign Manager, 49, Dies Uninsured, Of Pneumonia, Leaving family $400,000 Debt

What a testament to the Libertarian creed, which abhors the idea of universal health care. This loyal, passionate man who died too young left his family a debt of $400,000 in medical bills. And who knows whether he put off getting treatment for the pneumonia that killed him because he was uninsured.

Kent Snyder did some amazing work on the Ron Paul Campaign and as remembered as a "libertarian giant"- by Lew Rockwell, on libertarian site, Lew Rockwell.com.

The Wall Street journal reports that Kent, more than anyone else, persuaded Ron Paul to run for president. And Kent, according the the WSJ said, "ultimately became a $35 million operation with 250 employees that helped deliver more than one million votes for the Texas congressman's bid in the Republican nominating contest."

<SNIP>
Sadly, the Libertarian heart apparently does not include health care. The poor guy raised tens of millions of dollars and couldn't afford the $300-$600 a month that COBRA medical insurance would have cost.

Like I said: If anything universal health care protects doctors. It guarantees them a pool of PAYING customers. Plumbers don't get that kind of deal.

30. Uh, it's not pro-bono, novice.
Single PAYER does not mean doctors work for FREE. It's the ultimate freedom for employers and citizens - health care, paid by taxes, just like any other taxpayer-funded service you take for granted, no cancellations due to pre-existing conditions, there for you no matter WHAT. A healthier nation is a stronger nation.

17. Idiotic Randian babble-speak.
"Forcing" others to "serve" you.

Like these people performing the work aren't going to collect a paycheck for their services; as if not having a healthy population doesn't serve the needs and goals of the entire nation.

Libertarians, Objectivists and their ilk are nothing but selfish assholes that want to live in a bubble their entire lives.

20. True. They should go at this a different way
Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 04:06 PM by LuckyTheDog
Instead of saying that "doctors will be slaves," they should saying this:

"Under universal Obamacare, we'll all be slaves of the doctors because government will be guaranteeing their paychecks. That makes all of us liable (collectively!) for the medical bills of everyone else. It means that doctors will have a RIGHT to be paid! That is a right I don't get and the Constitution does not grant! It also makes doctors into a special elite class above and beyond plumbers, car mechanics and hair stylists. None of the other service providers are being offered a guaranteed pool of paying customers! And what makes THEM better than plumbers, huh? Is it because of their elitist college educations?" This is just another way of subsidizing the liberal indoctrination camps we call universities!

That line of attack would be closer to the truth, AND it would have the added benefit of allowing the right wingers to attack an educated group -- always a plus for them.

21. Politicians... sound as if healthcare will be free ????
Which ones? The whole debate on capitol hill right now is who pays, how is it paid and how much the government can guarantee with out creating further crushing federal debt. What is Ron missing the whole current debate? Isn't that like his job to be part of the actual debate. It's like he made something up just to enlighten us with his amazing wisdom. Did you know THINGS COST MONEY. Next Ron Paul tells you water is wet.
