We have heard that the GOP is making a mistake by alienating minorities through their repeated appeals to racism. Indeed, conservatives are occasionally featured in interviews expressing concern about these appeals. However, despite this "concern," Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, etc., continue to engage in this hate mongering. Now, on the left, many of us have dismissed these efforts as self-inflicted wounds.
HOWEVER, maybe these efforts really reflect a strategy by the GOP to simply forgo appealing to a diverse base, and instead make a fairly blatant appeal to racism by whites based on the recognition that whites are still a majority. In other words, rather than try to make the GOP more diverse, why not simply inspire racism and xenophobia to drive white males solidly into the Republican party. Look at the Sotomayor hearings and the indignation at the so-called disparagement of white males. Look at how the Professor Gates arrest, and President Obama's remarks, were portrayed as attack on law enforcement and white people.
In other words, maybe GOP strategists said, "Screw it, we aren't going to get minority votes. So, lets just fan the flames of racism among whites, and males in particular?"
My opinion is that we on the left are wrong in thinking that the GOP is worried about losing minorities votes. I think the GOP has already made the decision to throw minorities under the bus.
Need further proof? I predict that starting in 2010, the next big RW talking topic is going to consist of attacks on immigration once again. Many Republicans felt betrayed by President Bush's opposition to efforts to stiffen immigration penalties. Otherwise, the racists in the GOP would have had their way. They will get their second chance starting early next year.
