Suskind: Cheney wanted ’show of force’ on 9/11 anniversary
By David Edwards and Daniel Tencer

Published: July 28, 2009

Vice-President Dick Cheney wanted to use the arrest of the Lackawanna Six accused terrorists as an advertisement of America’s might and resolve on the first anniversary of 9/11, says a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.

Ron Suskind, author of The Way of the World, a book about the Bush administration’s misdeeds in the “war on terror,” told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that “Cheney had his eye on the 9/11 anniversary, he wanted a big show, a show of force, a show of resolve, a show of expanded power, and that’s part of what I understand was driving Cheney’s desire to send troops into downtown Lackawanna.”

On Friday, RAW STORY reported on claims that Cheney had wanted to use US troops to arrest the Lackawanna Six in September of 2002, a move that would have violated the long-standing Posse Comitatus Act, which forbids the use of the US Army on home soil.

3. Bush-Cheney-Rove were all about SHOW and nothing about competent military leadership
or good governance.

One enormous dogandpony show for their cheerleader base while the fascist agenda was served.

4. So he wanted a Soviet-style parade of weaponry rumbling down the avenue?
Or did he wish to invade and conquer a small, insignificant nation (to be chosen by tossing darts at a wall map)?

Having the military play beat cop would NOT have been enough for him.

It must be rough, a Dick living life with such a tiny dick...

5. Thinkin ol dick wanted to see if the military would act against civilians in the US too
Gotta know how far you can push and get the response you want from your forces. The Soviet Army drew a line and stopped following orders to act against their own mothers and grandmothers. Dick probably didn't want that kind of failure as he marched to greater executive powers. A test or two would seem prudent.

8. "show of force"? the US hasn't faced anybody with a real navy or air force in 57 years!!!
hell, even its North Vietnamese blitz did absolutely nothing to change the war: we should've just handed over the keys and apologized for saying that a puppet state had the same legitimacy as Britain or an independence revolution
Either the US has gotten local officers to do the dirty work for them (Guatemala, Honduras, Iran, Brazil, El Salvador) or beat up the smallest country it could find (Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Grenada, the menacing forces of Somalia and Pakistan). Soviet foreign policy in the depths of the cynical Brezhnev gloom didn't approach the ridiculousness of the US Cold Wars against foreign Commies and now "ruthless" Islamists: for every Derg they propped up as "progressive" or for every Afghanistan they hideously bombarded, the US has done, like 20. Furthermore, I don't recall Moscow self-righteously blaming the mujahedeen for the casualties its reckless bombing caused.
