Sarah Grabs the Grievance Grab Bag From Hillary
By MAUREEN DOWD
WASHINGTON

The woman who was prematurely counted in is out. And the woman who was prematurely counted out is in.

Goodbye, Sarah. Hello, Hillary.

In their vivid twin performances Sunday — Hillary on “Meet the Press” in Washington and Sarah at her farewell picnic in Fairbanks — two of the most celebrated and polarizing women in American political history offered a fascinating contrast.

Hillary, who so often in the past came across as aggrieved, paranoid and press-loathing, was confident and comfortable in her role as top diplomat, discussing the world with mastery and shrugging off suggestions that she has been disappeared by her former rival, the president.

Sarah, who was once a blazingly confident media darling, came across as aggrieved, paranoid and press-loathing in her new role as bizarre babe-at-large, a Nixon with hair extensions ranting about “American apologetics,” which sounds like a cross between apologists and Dianetics.

Sarah once criticized Hillary for being a whiny presidential contender, arguing that women who want “to progress this country” should not complain about being under a “sharper microscope,” but instead should just work harder to prove themselves capable. Now Sarah is a whiny presidential contender, complaining about the sharper microscope that women wanting to progress this country are under and rejecting advice to work harder to prove herself capable.

The Alaskan who shot to stardom a year ago as the tough embodiment of Diana the Huntress has now stepped down as governor and morphed into what the Republicans always caricatured Hillary as — preachy, screechy and angry.

And Hillary, who is at long last in a job that she earned on her own merits, has lost that irritating question mark she used to carry around above her head like a thunder cloud: What is Hillary owed because of what she gave up, and went through, for Bill?

1. Why isn't the "liberal media" playing the clips of Sarah Palin calling,
in essence, Hillary a crybaby for whining about the media treating her badly?

2. When did Hillary Clinton act "aggrieved, paranoid and press-loathing"?
More Dowd fail, drawing on invented press narrative to create a nonexistent parallel to write about. Once again, Dowd is wasted space.

5. Something I thought that I would never see ...
MoDo actually saying something kind about Hillary.
But, being the scorpion that she is, she had to say it in a nasty way. Hillary is female, as am I. But any similarity to Palin for either of us stops right there.
MoDo and Sarah Palin are two of a kind, except that MoDo is at least coherent.

6. Mo Dowd: she hates EVERYBODY.
A week ago, people were celebrating Dowd slamming one Republican or another. Now she slams Clinton. Don't you people get it yet? The only person who counts in Dowd's world is Dowd. Ignore her.

9. i find it refreshing
not that i think her writing is particularly good, but the fact that she slams people on BOTH sides of the aisle makes for better reading imo. but then partisan polemics aint my bag.

i like pj orourke fwiw. he's right wing, but he's not above nailing repubs. he once said that republicans are the party that claims govt. doesn't work, then gets elected and proves it. another fave is when he criticizes repubs for getting so intent on "fetus empowerment".

does dowd use a bit o hyperbole and such to make a point? of course. it's a frigging opinion piece.

you are right though. people celebrate dowd when she slams the other side. then whinge when she slams our side. again, i find it refreshing.

7. Demeaning to even place the words "Sarah Palin" anywhere near "Hillary Clinton.
There is no comparison.

Hillary holds respect, intellect, maturity & experience of law, government & world affairs.

Palin has proven that she cannot even act such parts.

Dowd's last ditch effort to align, in any sort of fashion, a miserable failure with success.

8. Dowd's representation of Hillary is what we always called a left handed compliment.
While pretending to say something nice about someone, you bring up all sorts of negative comments. There's no comparison between Sarah, the wannabe, and Hillary. None.

10. None, none, none.

Odd that it took this to open ol' MoDo's eyes.

14. You Hillary Worshipers Are Missing MoDo's Point.

And more importantly, you're failing to give Hillary credit for extraordinary improvement in her public performance. If she'd previously exhibited the sort of self-assurance and sure-footed political instincts she has on display now, she'd be in the White House and Obama would be Secretary of State.

Give it up for Maureen Dowd (even if it hurts): this is one of the best, most devastating take-downs of Sarah Palin, ever......
