That's one of the perks of living in the land of the free.

I did walk nearly 20 miles in Arizona heat; but that was just to hike the Grand Canyon for fun.

50. But, us non-"lazy ass" Americans risk our lives walking an biking
My bike is rotting in my garage because it's too dangerous to ride it around here. Cyclists are just moving targets. I got sick of too many close calls, as well as having things thrown at me, so no more biking, much to my dismay. Forget walking, too. No sidewalks, and the streets are as dangerous for pedestrians as they are for cyclists. I would rather not have to drive, but I have no choice.

53. Sorry, my anecdotal evidence proves that you're wrong
20 years of cycling on the streets almost every day.

No serious incidents. If anyone's ever thrown anything at me they missed and I didn't notice.

And no, I don't live in a particularly enlightened area of the country.

You just have to be a very defensive "driver."

Since I learned to drive in an old VW Beetle that wasn't much of an adjustment.

Or maybe you just have to cultivate a "Don't Fuck With Me" persona.

Regardless, it can be done if there's enough desire.

I can use the light rail to get pretty much anywhere. But 99 percent of Phoenicians are too far away to use the light rail. The system is still to small to actually promote public transportation for all.

18. I was teasing a bit but if they can get the light rail to more cities it could help.
I'm over here in Glendale. It does me no good. I need my car.

I'd have to walk about 2 blocks just to get a bus and the people I know who have used the bus system say that to get anywhere using the bus plan on it taking at least 3 times longer than driving a car there. I don't have that kind of time to waste.

49. Public transportation?
What's that? It's non-existent in most of my state, South Carolina. Here, the car is king. I have seen people start up their cars and drive across the street, rather than walk an extra 30 feet from the post office parking lot to the grocery store. Not exaggerating. Once, when I was walking the block and a half to the post office, somebody asked me if I was "feeling poor" because I didn't drive instead. I just pointed out that I wasn't so lazy as to rot out my exhaust system by short tripping my car for a lousy three block round-trip. Public transit probably wouldn't work with these idiots anyway. It's just, you know, so commie, pinko socialist.

Averages 20 mpg combined. I can't afford a car pmt at all but I checked for the hell of it....It doesn't qualify.

But when I look at all the big SUV's on the road, if this helps get some of them off, I think it's a good idea. Let's just don't have any more bullshit wars and we'll have all kinds of money for incentive programs that will help save on fossil fuel pollution.

17. Here's a website on the program--from the consumer side
http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/bill/858-million-left-for-cars-program

If you look at the gallery, it shows that most people are getting rid of genuine clunkers.

And if you watch television at all, you might notice the ads about the program. Which means that the manufacturers and dealers are spending money on advertising and videos--a little stimulus in a sector that has been badly hurt by the decline in auto advertising.

22. Nope, you're wrong. We just got $4500 for our 1999 Blazer with a gazillion
miles on it. We traded it in for a Chevy Malibu Hybrid so we get a tax credit, too. And we used our GM Card earnings so that took off additional money on top of the $4500 and tax credit.

41. But then again, cars might be handed down through the family...
Or someone didn't realize how poor the gas mileage was at the time of purchase. There are many scenarios where someone might end up with a gas hog.

You seem to think that everyone is in the exact same situation you are. They aren't. So get over it.

42. How difficult is it to know what mileage a car gets when you buy it?
If you don't, well, you're a bit dumb, which is what I said originally.

As for people getting hand-me-downs for from their family. . .

If their wheels are free why should taxpayers shell out four grand to get them "better" wheels?

When my clunker died I sold it for the cost of towing it away.

Color me bitter.

(Especially when I saw it restored on the streets a few years later)

43. You are acting very bitter.
I never said anything about hand-me-down cars being worthy of taxpayer dollars. I was using that as an example for why some people drive gas hogs.

When someone purchases a car, they can look up the average mpg from the manufacturer. Which may or may not be accurate. My truck is suppose to average around 20 mpg. But since it's 11 years old and needs bit of work, it only averages about 16. That's a 20% drop in fuel efficiency from the manufacturer estimates.

There are also other situations where a person might need a car right away. And the only car they can afford at the time is a clunker that gets bad gas mileage.

But that's okay, calling people stupid or lazy seems to be your thing. Sounds pretty miserable to me.
