Really Cool DU'ers were promoting Algae as answer to our Fuel Problems...Guess What
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 07:50 PM by KoKo
EXXON is the one Promoting Algae as fuel alternative. You get the drift? Exxon goes Green? In your Dreams for the SCAM... (Check out the Exxon Ads on MSNBC all day about their "Algae Discovery."}

There's something else afoot...but what...I expect to get ignore or UnRecommend but I feel sad so many DU'ers jump on some Hype/Crap from Exxon-Mobil (Killers of Wildlife in Alaska and Elsewhere rapers of the Planet) that they come on here promoting something by them as "New Discovery."

:-(

1. Makes sense to me that Exxon would promote algae...
after all, pond scum likes pond scum.

4. But they aren't the only ones looking at algae as a fuel source.
It is a legitimate technology that has a lot of scientists and others working on it. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algae_fuel and http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/08/080818184434.htm

Just the fact that Exxon Mobil is looking into it doesn't mean it's bad. It's not hype at all.

7. the fact that exxonmobil is looking into it shows that it may have the vast potential promised.
anything worthwhile to soften the blow of peak oil is probably a good idea to explore.

9. Exactly. They may be greedy but they aren't stupid.
If algae biofuel is a promising technology it would figure that the oil companies would want to get in on it before the oil runs out.

5. Just a suggestion
If you're going to call something a scam, a site describing why would be something good to include.

Otherwise, it's just an unsupported opinion.

6. Exxon Mobil didn't come up with the idea.
Your post is the first I've heard about them being involved in the technology.

Just like BP didn't invent windmills.

10. In the news today...

OriginOil Completes and Looks To Patent Live Algae Oil Extraction Process
Los Angeles, United States
OriginOil Inc. announced that it has succeeded in extracting algae oil on a continuous basis without cell sacrifice. This new "milking" process could join the company's Cascading Production technique to create a combined cycle promising new efficiencies.

Algae typically protect their oil behind a tough cell wall. The challenge of live extraction is to harvest the oil without causing permanent damage to the cell.

The company's Live Extraction process, or "milking", is designed to achieve continuous production of algae oil without destroying the algae cell. Therefore a single algae cell can produce more oil during its lifetime using lower amounts of energy. OriginOil’s process does not employ consumables such as reverse osmosis membranes and it is not limited to oil-bearing algae strains, such as Botryococcus braunii, that are known to excrete algae oil naturally.

Algae typically protect their oil behind a tough cell wall. The challenge of live extraction is to harvest the oil without causing permanent damage to the cell. This goal has been achieved in the laboratory at bench scale and is now being scaled up to OriginOil’s intermediate 200-gallon tank size.

The company recently filed for patent protection of the new Live Extraction process, its ninth patent application, entitled “Procedure for Extraction of Lipids from Algae without Cell Sacrifice.”

Aw. Not Exxon.

11. You think I am a really cool DUer?

Back at you!

(Exxon jumping on the bandwagon doesn't make the technology bad, just like it doesn't make Exxon suddenly good. IOW Algae still promising, Exxon still evil)
