He was arrested for throwing paint on Communist leader Mao Zedong's portrait during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, for which the Chinese government imprisoned and tortured him for 17 years. He came to the U.S. in May after being granted political asylum. On July 16, Yu Dongyue left his home in Indianapolis on his red 10-speed bicycle and didn't return....
Because Yu Dongyue smelled of alcohol and wouldn't speak to officers, he was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication. Lawrence officer Ralph Bridgeforth filled out a list of Yu Dongyue's property at the jail processing center, noting he had no ID. Usually in such cases, a suspect would be called John Doe, but Bridgeforth entered another name: Jackie Chan. Yu Dongyue was booked under that name as well. The name might have kept authorities from making a connection between the man with no ID and the Chinese refugee who had been reported missing....
