The Swine Flu Vaccine, Pregnant Women and Thimerosal

I just heard in the news that pregnant women will be first in line to receive the Swine Flue vaccine this fall. So, given the controversy surrounding Thimerosal and autism, I was curious as to whether this vaccine will contain Thimerosal. Here’s the skinny:

If you (or your doctor) are informed and concerned, you can request a Thimerosal-free shot. If you’re not, you get Thimerosal.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I’m not Anti-Vaccine. I’m going to get the vaccine, my wife will get the vaccine and my son will get the vaccine. I’ll insist that my son get the Thimerosal free shot – myself and my wife I’m not so concerned about.

But I think it’s crappy that poor pregnant women will get a Thimerosal laden shot. And why? So that a few cents can be saved by using a multi-stick vial to distribute the vaccine? Crappy.
