Barrett's getting fired fromTWO jobs...
...but Crowley's drinking brewskis with the President Of The United States Of America.

Funny old world, ain't it.

1. He better get all the free beer while he can.
The story on this guy is far from over.

2. Just heard about Barrett. Read the email
sounds like a real right wing crazy. Wonder how someone with issues like his could become a policeman.
Why do I think he will be the next repub hero?

4. I'm tempted to think that's the sort of person they look for to be a cop..
If I didn't have a (now deceased) relative that was a very nice guy and a high ranking cop I would indeed think that.

3. There's a world of difference between Crowley's actions and Barrett's.
Most importantly, Crowley's motivations are debatable and unclear, Barrett's actions are unmistakable.

Quite a difference there..

11. Unlawful arrest, abuse of power, filing a false police report...
probably some federal civil rights violations in there too.

12. The arrest was lawful because he lured Gates outside.
In terms of the police report, somebody would have to show bad intent and that he simply wasn't suffering from a Reaganesque faulty memory.

Abuse of power? geez.

Crowley is an ass, but I don't see anyone lining up to arrest his for breaking any laws.

14. How about disjointed logic? Ending a sentence in a preposition?
Trumping his partner's ace?

There's gotta be something we can arrest this guy for.

15. Make up your mind.
You just said he lured Gates out so he could arrest him for a crime that Crowley wanted to happen.

That's criminal conspiracy.

16. No, it is not. Cops are fully capable of coaxing "perps" to give up their rights...
... without it being a crime or a conspiracy.

You get the last word.

17. They can coax people to give up their rights, sure.
But they can't conspire to have a law-abiding citizen committ a crime, which is what you just said Crowley did.

18. I changed my mind. Your comment is too silly to let go.
Going outside isn't a crime. However, raising a shitstorm outside can be interpreted as disturbing the peace or creating a public nuisance or whatever, and that's what Crowley busted him for.

Crowley is a total dick. You don't need to make stuff up.

19. Crowley's a total dick, and a criminal.
Gates was not committing a crime, Crowley (according to you) thought that if he could lure Gates out to his porch a crime would be committed where none would be committed otherwise, that's criminal conspiracy.

If I lure Danny DeVito to push my wife off a yacht, even if I don't actually do the pushing myself, that's criminal conspiracy.

22. Me too.
Unfortunately, it appears the justice system is too tainted to prosecute him.

Obviously he's walking on eggshells now, that's why he's got the team of lawyers to keep him from admitting his crimes.

which is probably why Crowley will be attending Obama's White House "beer summit" with a lawyer and a police union official (link).

28. Not even Gates himself says he was lured outside
http://www.theroot.com/views/skip-gates-speaks?page=0,1
It escalated as follows: I kept saying to him, 'What is your name, and what is your badge number?' and he refused to respond. I asked him three times, and he refused to respond. And then I said, 'You're not responding because I'm a black man, and you're a white officer.' That's what I said. He didn't say anything. He turned his back to me and turned back to the porch. And I followed him. I kept saying, "I want your name, and I want your badge number."

It looked like an ocean of police had gathered on my front porch. There were probably half a dozen police officers at this point. The mistake I made was I stepped onto the front porch and asked one of his colleagues for his name and badge number.

According to Gates, Crowley said not a single word and just left the house with Gates following voluntarily behind. No luring involved.

7. Thanks. Barrett was an English teacher?
Not only is he unfit to be in any kind of uniform due to his overt racism, but he is intellectually and psychologically unfit to be a teacher as well. That entire email was vile, hateful, illogical and very badly written. Did Barrett ever hear of paragraphs?

In addition to the "jungle monkey" remark which he makes several times in the email he also uses "ax you" or "ax me", another racial dig. And what's with calling the writer of the article an "infidel" and asking what Gates has done to "help limit and reduce my income tax"? I wouldn't want Barret anywhere near a position of authority.

10. Trust me -- despite the yammering on the right that schools are awash with liberal teachers,
... teachers like Barrett are dime a dozen. And, despite their hideous, hateful attitudes, they are hard to flush from system.

Imagine my surprise to be visiting one of our kids' journalism classe and to find a calendar on the wall featuring Fetus of the Month. It was some kind of pro-life propaganda with pictures of fetuses -- alive, dead, aborted, what have you.

23. Our local high school is a haven for right wing wackos.
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 03:36 PM by PA Democrat
My son's AP Government teacher was a hard core right winger. She constantly bashed liberals and even encouraged her class to participate in Rush's operation chaos to vote for Hillary in the primary. (My son and 2 other students were the only Democrats in the class) She assigned her students writing assignments on topics like "Republicans Think; Democrats Feel". He always aced objective tests but never got anything above a B on his essays and frequently got Cs and Ds, despite the fact that he is an excellent writer. I am NOT one of those parents who coddles her kid and refuses to believe that their little Johnny always deserves nothing less than an A, so when I say her political bias influenced her grading, you can take that to the bank.

My husband an attorney, helped him with an assignment on the Supreme Court on a specific area of the law in which he is an expert. I can't remember whether my son got a B or a C, but my husband was pretty mad. And no, we didn't call the school to complain because we felt that dealing with people like this teacher is part of an education.

Then there was the Spanish teacher who lectured students about keeping Christ in Christmas, and why we should have English as the official language, which I thought was really strange for someone who teaches Spanish!. Then she questioned the patriotism of a number of students (including my son) who she falsely accused of "refusing to say the pledge." That one my husband called about when the teacher assigned an essay on "Why Patriotism is Important" or face detention and the loss of a letter grade in the class.

The Chorus concerts always include church hymns. Commencement included Christian prayer, and it seemed that they just dared anyone to challenge them on it. I counted three Confederate flag bumper stickers in the school parking lot one day, despite the fact that this is PA.

Yeah, public schools are awash with liberal teachers just like the media is overwhelmingly liberal.

I have not heard that kind of talk since my great-grandfather died in 1968.

30. I don't make it a habit to hang with people who think or talk like that.
I get out often enough, but I am selective about the company I keep. I'll admit it -- that makes me a bit naive.
