Calif: Governor approves new San Quentin Death Row
Governor approves new San Quentin Death Row

Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has given the go-ahead for construction of a new Death Row at San Quentin State Prison by vetoing legislative restrictions, an action that a Marin County lawmaker called both unwise and illegal.

While announcing $489 million in cuts Tuesday from the state's 2009-10 budget, Schwarzenegger said he was saving additional, unspecified amounts by rejecting language added to the budget that would have delayed the Death Row project.

Legislators approved $356 million last year for a 768-cell housing unit for condemned prisoners, tentatively scheduled to open in late 2011. It would replace a section of the 150-year-old prison that now holds nearly 670 inmates, the nation's largest Death Row.

In a critical June 2008 report, the state auditor's office predicted a $39 million cost overrun and questioned the state's plans to place two inmates in each cell.

5. That disgusting POS masquerading as a governor has been whining and
making threats about our "bloated" budget for months. We are facing closure of all our state parks, and cuts in funding for BASIC MEDICAL CARE for children in poverty, among other things. Nice to know he has his priorities straight.

9. It's a nightmare.
So much damage is being done. It is going to take our state a long time to recover.

6. I read that this morning --
It is completetly disgusting. :puke: Looks like Arnie is just paying back another special interest group of his -- the prison industry is very big here in CA. :(
And the most vulnerable Californians will suffer for this.

10. After cutting off all funds for women's shelters
I'm guessing that Ah-nuld is just meeting the demand for the new supply of wife-murderers he's about to unleash on California. When women's bodies start piling up, I hope every Californian, horrified that a man could do that to his wife, will remember that it was Gov. Schwarzenegger and his Republican pals in the legislature that paved the way for this festival of carnage and death.
