Puppy saved from stabbing now for sale online
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - A pit bull puppy that was saved by a Mission Viejo rescue group after being stabbed seven times by its owner is now for sale on Craigslist for $300.

Erin Lup adopted the 14-month-old bluenose pit bull after her ex-boyfriend stabbed it Jan. 21. She posted an ad on the Web site Craigslist on Tuesday.

The ad says the puppy, Azure, is lovable but Lup finds it difficult to keep a large animal

The dog recovered from surgery costing $5,000, which was paid for by the nonprofit Pet Rescue Center.

Dr. Matthew Wheaton, who runs the rescue group, was dismayed to hear Lup was trying to sell the dog. He says he called her and offered to help find Azure a stable home.

Lup couldn't be reached for comment.

Her ex-boyfriend, Justin Carrafield, is serving time for animal cruelty.

Let's see, rescuers shell out $5000 and the woman takes him, only to try and sell him for $300...are there any laws that say the rescue group can go take this poor dog back and try to find it a good home and while they're at it, give this idiot woman a good lecture?

1. Most rescues and animal shelters insist...
That if you cannot give a permanent home to the furry one you adopt you must return it to them. You are not allowed to resell them.

2. The Humane Society whose board I served on had this in all adoption
contracts. But, if they didn't consider this an adoption, they probably didn't have her sign a contract. I don't understand why they gave the animal veterinary care, and then returned it to the same environment where it had been stabbed. She should have been required to sign the dog over in the first place.

15. No Adoption. I thought the owner was selling the dog after the adoption group fixed it for her.
Because it was her BF who stabbed it.

I'm trying to get them the money to just buy the dog.

3. It's too short a story to find out if they did have her sign anything...
...maybe she brought it in and was the one who reported it to the authorities and they figured she was responsible? Just guessing...lots of info missing here.

13. Was the dog somewhat hers in the first place? I don't really know.
It was her ex-boyfriend that stabbed the dog.

Did the dog start out in her house? The article is sort of vague in that regard...

I think she should let the people that helped the dog make arrangements for it.

5. Someone needs to put a stop to that shit --
right now. Unfuckingbelievable. If she was "having trouble keeping a large animal" she could have returned the pup to the rescue group, not a problem. But she wants to make some money off that pup. What a sorry excuse for a human being -- she doesn't deserve thing as wonderful as a puppy.

I am sure that the humane society to which I make donations can take the puppy and find a good home for it. This is ridiculous.... I don't know if I actually believe the story ... and who paid the $5k for his veterinary care????

7. The vet cost was paid for by a rescue group ---
she adopted the pup from the rescue group -- they've been trying to get the pup back one they heard she was trying to sell it. Rescue groups usually have very strict requirements about the animals they adopt out -- selling the adopted animal would usually be in direct violation of the adoption agreement.

But I will be less so after I start my standard Thursday Airport drinking routine. The flights are delayed and I'm stressed.

33. "Selling" a dog like a pit for a high dollar amount keeps bunchers, backyard breeders etc away
I don't know the full story here, but at least she is trying to keep the dog out the hands of potential abuses by weeding them out by asking for a sum of money high enough to keep them away. Whether she knows that's ehat she's doing or not really doesn't matter to me, because it's keeping the dog safe.

Yes, the dog should go to the rescue group, but I don't know the full story and it seems she is at least making an effort to see he goes to a safe home.

"people with more than $300 to spend on a pet" with people who actually care for animals! This has to be one of the sickest examples of class/race (which?) based simpleminded stereotyping ever posted on DU, although there have been all too many others.

76. There are NO SHORTAGE of places to get a pet for less than $300.
Edited on Tue Aug-04-09 12:12 AM by Withywindle
Most shelters will adopt out dogs or cats - fully vet-checked, spayed/neutered, etc - for less than $100. Many of them run extensive networks with vet clinics who will do pet care for low-income people. At least that's the way it is in Chicago, which has a surplus of homeless animals. I paid $60 for adoption fees for my cat, which included spaying, health check, and shots, at Anti-Cruelty Society, and they threw in a 10-lb bag of Science Diet food with the deal!

Of course, they will insist on interviewing you first and checking your references with landlord and vet who cared for past pets, if any. OH the horror.

Oh, and you might not be able to find exactly the specific breed that feeds whatever your fantasy of yourself is. OH the horror.

I admit I look down on people who look for pets on fucking Craigslist. There are so many good dogs and cats in shelters who need homes - go get one! You'll know more about your animal's history and health than you will from some stranger on the Internet. Even if you simply must have a "pure breed" or more exotic pet, care enough about the type of animal to interact with some specialized breeders or Internet communities into that particular type of creature; there are thousands out there, just fucking google. You'll have a much better chance of accidentally educating yourself about the specific pros and cons and individual needs of that kind of critter, at any rate. And it's not a class issue: if you have the net access to cruise Craigslist, you have the net access to google "pit bull rescue community in my area"

47. most shelters have contracts that forbid sale of adoptees
usually, they require that the dog, cat or whatever be returned to them if the adopter can't keep for whatever reason.

So it should fall under contract law. I can't imagine any rescue that shells out that kind of rehab money that doesn't have stringent contracts in place...

68. Azure!
I popped my head in to visit with Azure while a dog from the rescue I volunteer with was recovering at the same time. I'm so sad to read what is going on. I'm forwarding this to my rescue because many also grew to love Azure. Maybe they can offer up some cash assistance. Dr. Wheaton happens to be my dog's vet. He's just awesome, and I know he worked so hard to help Azure. Terrible.

74. I've heard nothing.
xultar said she'd keep us updated. She also said she'd be more likely to hear something today. I'm pretty much waiting to see if there have been any further developments.

80. This, too, was from -7/30/09, but it's the latest update I could find.
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/dog-azure-lup-2513379-wheaton-pet

"That ad (Craigs List) was taken down on Wednesday night. A Google search for pit bulls found Azure Thursday morning offered for $500 on k9stud.com."

Further Quote from the article:

On Thursday, Wheaton (the vet) fielded numerous calls from clients and people who had donated for Azure's recovery.

"They all said they wanted to buy her back so that Pet Rescue Center can find her a good home," Wheaton said. "But one of her stipulations is that she wants continued contact. I can't guarantee a family that adopts the dog will let her do that. Everyone is willing to throw down the money to get the dog out of her house."

Sorry, but that is the latest I have found. As to whether or not the pup was sold, I have no idea. If anyone hears anything, please keep us apprised.

Thanks.

81. Here's a little bit of an update....
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/dog-azure-lup-2513379-wheaton-pet

Sounds like people are willing to buy it back from the woman to give to the shelter so it can find the puppy a home...the issue doesn't appear to be lack of money, but contacting this fool who's selling it.
