Soo much uproar over the MA cop with the WHY-TEE Licence Plate...WELL GUESS WHAT!
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 12:33 PM by xultar
A very special friend of mine sent me the background information on the picture.
---
His name is Mike “Whitey” Daniluk. He grew up in the multi-cultural projects in cambridge, was given the nickname by the other kids. It’s a common nickname in MA. He spends a lot of his time volunteering in teen centers, etc. He’s not a racist. Just a guy nicknamed whitey by his friends because his hair was so light.

I can't wait for the Xultar is a racist apologist aka Uncle Tom replies to posts so bring it on. I can take it.

I hadn't plan to start a thread today but sometimes you just gotta. You just can't control those lying "alleged animal care" workers

And to you lurkers peace and love to you.

would have had a complaint.

I'm waiting for the post condemning JFK for nominating Whizzer White to the Supreme Court.

6. HA!!!!!! That was one of my guesses!!!
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 12:23 PM by MADem
I said that unless he was a blond as a kid and nicknamed Whitey, he's got trouble!

It is a common nickname, not just in Boston but among northern Europeans of English speaking heritage across the country. Beaver Cleaver had a friend named Whitey.

It's usually a nickname given to children (who often keep the name long after their hair color changes) who are platinum blonds as kids. Many, like Mister Bulger, keep the name into adulthood!

Edit to add a blurb on the sad life of "Whitey Whitney" from LITB:

Whitey from Leave It To Beaver

Stanley Fafara was born September 20, 1949 and grew up around Studio City, California. His mother wanted him to be an actor and so he landed work in commercials, "Rin Tin Tin", "Wanted: Dead Or Alive", and the role of Whitey Whitney in "Leave It To Beaver". When Beaver left his teacher's classroom with a note to bring home to Ward and June, Whitey had the first line spoken in the show, "What did she do to you, Beaver?". "Leave It To Beaver" aired originally from 1957-1963 on CBS and ABC.
But Whitey Whitney's life during "Leave It To Beaver" and Stanley Fafara's life after that show, were entirely different.

During his teenage years, he was drinking and doing drugs. By the age of 22, he started dealing drugs.

In the 1980s, Stanley was breaking into pharmacies and was sentenced to a year in jail for burglary. When he got out, he resumed drug dealing to support his habit and worked some jobs.

In the 1990s, he moved to Portland and wanted to leave the drug world. But he descended into being a junkie. After life in a rented motel room and then the streets, he put himself into a detox center in 1995.

He became clean and sober, moving into a halfway house for recovering addicts and alcoholics. Later, living near Skid Row, Social Security checks helped him barely get by until he went into the hospital.

Wanting to get back into show business, Fafara took some acting classes near the end but it didn't work out.

Stanley Fafara had surgery to repair a constricted intestine caused by a hernia. In a Portland, Oregon hospital, he died of complications from that surgery on September 20, 2003.. . . .

8. Xultar is a....
Nah couldn't do it. Once racial tension is in the news, everything takes on that air of "racism". I think that Crowley had something to do with race, but less so than a case of "RESPECT MY ATHORITA!" The Boston cop Jarrett is definitely about race. That guy is an asshole. The license plate sounds like it is just a license plate.

9. 'member Whitey Ford? I know a guy named Whitey Stone.
I don't think it's as common as it used to be. I had a caddymaster when I was a teen who couldn't remember anyone's name, so the light-haired guys were "Whitey", the skinny guys were "Slim", and the big guys were "Tiny". The "Tiny" thing was kind of degrading, but the caddymaster was a pretty big guy too.

15. See my blurb about "Whitey Whitney"--Beaver Cleaver's pal--upthread.
"Tiny" used to be common for big guys way back when, too. It wasn't viewed as degrading either--it was viewed as "ironic." Of course, back then obesity wasn't as common.

23. Well that's what happens when there is a history of racial problems in your city
or your police department- your innocent nickname license plate takes on a whole new possible meaning. I think it was a stretch for anyone to assume this guy was making some overtly racist statement with his vanity plate, still when your colleagues are engaged in questionable behavior again and again regarding race, people are naturally going to look twice at something like that.

He was just all white, unusual for a Pyr and unlike his siblings.

I might name something Red, Brownie, Blackie, or Old Blue. I had a black cat named Spooky (she was born on Halloween). Oh, shit. I'm in trouble now.

39. Why-tee license plate equals Uproar?
Not sure how "common" the nickame "whitey" is up this way in Boston (at least among us black folks), but I suppose Dan Quayle was correct when he said (and I paraphrase), "A mind is a terrible thing to lose, or not have have all."

In my humble opinion, this was surely a no-brainer. Must be a generational gap or something.

By the way, I'm a transplanted southerner who has resided in Massachusetts for most of his life and is married to a woman who was born and raised in one of the "multi-cultural" (I prefer the term "multi-ethnic" instead) projects in Cambridge.

41. I totally missed this hubbub
It sounds really stupid, though. I'm thinking a white bigot wouldn't go with "whitey" as a way of pumping his cause as I've never heard it used that way as anything but a slam.

Some might want to turn down the "sensitivity meter" a bit and I'm nearly polar opposite to Crowley taint licker.
