Has anyone notice that there are not hordes of Canadians fleeing their health system
and descending on the US to get better health care? You may hear about an exceptional case. Most Canadians live within 1-2 hours of the US so it would be a quick trip over to get our much better health care. Many Canadians carry supplemental insurance like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Canada that would enable them to use US facilities.

Lou Dobbs isn't on the tube howling about the hordes of illegal Canadians descending on our emergency rooms or clogging waiting rooms. There are no emergency or life threatening procedures that aren't done right away. There are elective procedures that wait.

Lou Dobbs isn't talking about the UK system where wealthy patients with private insurance go to the head of the line and get taken care of before everyone else.

1. I think he's talking about the republican system.
Where they lie and lie some more and then lie again.

4. or French or Great Britains, or Irish, or Italians or Germans or...
I had a colleague here who was from France and when he and his wife had a child she made them move back to France to get away from our system.

9. Similar story
I worked with a French woman who was here for a very long time. We were both editors, she got her Masters at NC State. She had nary a trace of a French accent. But, when she found out she was pregnant with her second child, she made arrangments to move back home.

We were well on the way to becoming the rarest of best friends, but I completely don't blame her at all.

I still miss her and hope she is happier.

5. In Canada,if there is a reliable treatment in the US,that isn't availible up here,
the health care system pays for that treatment, including transportation.

6. I was talking to my sister about this the other day.
She expressed concerns about "that horrible Canadian system", repeating the standard Republican lies about endless lines for treatment & the exodus to the US as a result.

The thing is my sister is a nurse & works in the largest public hospital in Buffalo. You can look out the window and see Canada. I asked her how many of her patients were from Canada. Answer: none. How many Canadians has she had in the last year? She could count them on one hand.

A real facepalm moment.

7. That's because of that big fence and armed guards on the
Canadian border. Question why do Brits have such bad teeth, don't they have dental?

8. Now now, Mayo Clinic is loaded with Canadians receiving healthcare
Ya know, cuz we are so close to the border and all. At least that is what the local Rethuglican braintrust will tell you.

Of course, it might have more to do with the fact that Mayo has some of the leading specialists in pretty much any field, the facilities are state of the art and that in addition to Canada they attract patients from every state and pretty much every country on the planet.

11. If the media had a liberal bias...
... one of the big three would have a series on right now one hour a week spotlighting the healthcare system in other countries. One country a week.

12. Last March in North Carolina care dealership I met an American
there waiting for his car to be fixed. I was with my boyfriend and we were waiting for his truck to get an oil change. The American noticed we were Canadians and proceeded to tell us how much he loved going to Canada for his wife's special allergy treatments. She couldn't get this specific treatment down in the USA.

He was very happy with her care and also commented on how it was not expensive.

I am American born but a Canadian citizen by choice. I will never move back to the USA.
I love the one payer system. I am not bankrupt after having both a son and husband go through cancer treatment and finally dying but they got millions of dollars worth of care and it cost us nothing.

I only hope America will get what we have. Good luck.

19. Welcome riverbendviewgal!
I am so sorry for your losses. :(

I, too, hope we Americans can get the type of health care that you have.

Isn't it odd that every Canadian who posts here has wonderful things to say about health care up there, but every conservative I am acquainted with claims some friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend who is Canadian and has to wait for months to see a doctor. :wow:

14. Oddly enough...
I had this conversation with someone last night. He seems to think that Canadians ARE swarming to the US for health care! And that Canadians hate their system! I asked what his news sources were; and he told me the Wall Street Journal and Google News. I tried pointing out that the WSJ was a piece of RW trash since it was purchased by Murdoch, but he didn't care who owned it.

What fools these mortals be.

17. Has anyone noticed the elderly in the US aren't throwing their Medicare away?
Or those on assistance, they sure aren't getting rid of Medicaid. In my early twenties I was working at a place that didn't offer insurance and I broke my leg in 4 places. Had to have surgery to repair it and was then in a cast for 7 months, then had to have a second surgery to take some of the metal out of my leg. The entire process was covered by Medicaid. I had to wait three hours in the Welfare office and that was it. My care was decent and my leg healed. Had I had to pay for all that, I'd be in deep trouble to this day.

18. Emergency room, five years ago or so. Canadian couple, elderly, snowbirds
and me. She had injured her ankle and was in lots of pain but could walk on it. I was there with a high fever and vomiting (I have insulin-dependent diabetes as well). All of us waiting far too long to get care. He asks me, "Is it always like this in US? You should be in there already." I said, "Yes, pretty much."

They were ASTONISHED. Literally. The look of shock on their faces spoke volumes. I asked them about the rumored wait times in Canada (they were from Toronto, btw, not some tiny Yukon hamlet).

His answer? "Well, I cna tell you this much. We all would be back there getting treated about a half hour ago." This was about an hour after we had arrived almost at the same time.

They weren't in Scottsdale, Arizona for the healthcare, I can guarantee you of that.
