Levin: House to find more cash for clunkers
Lawmakers aim to pass $2 billion bill to keep rebate program alive

WASHINGTON - The House raced Friday to pass legislation pouring an additional $2 billion into the popular — but financially strapped — “cash for clunkers” car purchase program.

Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., revealed the floor plan after he and other lawmakers were assured by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the program would continue at least through Friday while the Obama administration looked for more money.

Democrats in both the House and Senate were exploring the possibility of votes as early as Friday to replenish the funding.

“If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend, using this program, this program continues to run,” Gibbs told reporters.

1. I have a few gripes about this program....
It rewards people who were stupid and bought giant gas-guzzlers, while those who bought more fuel-efficient models that are now very old and falling apart can't get anything to help trade up to something that's even better and more efficient.

Why can someone with say a hummer qualify while a guy with a 20 year old Honda can't?

3. What maddens me...
Is the they are going to take the 2 Billion dollars that was set aside from the innovative research funds allocated to future care development such as electric battery improvements, etc.

I am also concerned about the oversight of this program and whether dealers have ripped us off. I mean did they serious sell 250,000 cars in only 3 days of the program? Or was there some creative backdating and accounting going on. Who knows.
