Most important elections the next 2 years are NOT the US House or US Senate |
|
Most important elections are going to be your state congressional races. Now more than ever we need to focus on those races and ensure that democrats take or keep control of these congresses. The census is coming thru again in 2010 which means that redistricting will be coming soonafter. Now there are a few states that have logical breakdowns of congressional districts that eliminate partisonship; however, most congressional districts will be impacted by the party that controls the state congress and ESPECIALLY if one party controls both the house and senate. One of the reasons that republicans were so successful in 1994 with their "Contract on America" (as I like to call it) was that the redistricting was completed in 1992 and many of these districts were cut up in ways that made no sense except for dilituing democratic strongholds into republican areas. I know one district in Pennsylvania took part of Philadelphia and stretched it in a way that it included parts of rural Pennsylvania. There was no logic to the redistricting.
So we really need to pay attention to our local races and keeping them from being redistricted into an even WORSE mess.

we have a couple tight races here locally. hopefully we will have a new democratic representative from the il 10th, in the person of julie hamos. her vacant seat is the focus of a lot of attention. not likely to turn r, but could get a tool instead of the progressive that represents the district.
