"Top Secret" CNN Memo (re: Lou Dobbs)

Good morning, DUers. A friend from CNN e-mailed me a "TOP SECRET" internal document regarding Lou Dobbs’ spiral into the bowels of madness known as the "birther movement." Apparently, Dobbs has become focused on "Keith O from MSNBC," and believes that there are "spies" within his own CNN news room, coordinating efforts with the staff of MSNBC’s "Countdown." In fact, there are.

Due to the Democratic Underground’s ground rules on the number of paragraphs from other sources which can be copied here, I am only able to provide readers with about 1/5 of the actual "TOP SECRET" memo. In the future, I hope to post the paragraphs about Dobbs’ calls to Michele Malkin, where he proposes that if CNN actually does fire him, that the two of them try for a "reality television show" that blends the basic themes of "John and Kate plus eight" with "America’s Got Talent."

Now, for the memo. It was sent to the heads of various CNN departments, after a number of workers throughout CNN had filed complaints against Lou Dobbs. Many were concerned about his apparent unstable, increasingly threatening behavior. Some highlights from the memo include:

"Please be aware that the management of CNN is fully aware of the issues regarding Mr. Dobbs’ recent behavior, and shares everyone’s concerns. We have held a series of high-level meetings with the senior staff of our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and with the CNN attorneys. In order to protect the rights of all of the members of the CNN Family, we are not allowed to comment on the specifics of any single employee’s status. However, due to the high volume of complaints filed this week against Mr. Dobbs, our attorneys have suggested that we share some ‘generic’ information with department heads. Please use this general information when dealing with individuals who continue to express concerns about Mr. Dobbs’ behavior. ….

"(1) Employees of CNN are not allowed to carry any weapons, including firearms, knives, or clubs, on company property. Concerns about Mr. Dobbs’ comments about ‘needing to carry a handgun for his own safety’ have been addressed. Further, CNN security has been made aware of this concern, and is monitoring the situation. Attempts to convince Mr. Dobbs that his rapidly declining ratings are not the result of a conspiracy are on-going.

"Also addressed was Mr. Dobbs repeated request that the employees from make-up help him to appear similar to a character known as ‘the Joker’ from a recent ‘Bat Man’ film, so that he can ‘sneak into MSNBC’s studio and make a pencil disappear live on Countdown.’ Although Mr. Dobbs continues to claim this was meant in a humorous manner, he has been advised to stop this behavior. …..

"(3) Employees of CNN are not allowed to actively campaign for public office while on company time. There are further restrictions in CNN policies for CNN employees who appear ‘on air’ time. Before discussing this matter with Mr. Dobbs, CNN attorneys did review the seven documented cases of Mr. Dobbs violating this policy. Six of the seven groups that he was in contact with on company time were listed on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of extremist, white-supremacist groups.

"Mr. Dobbs claims that he has only worked on a proposed ‘speaking tour’ to promote a 2012 presidential ticket of Palin-Dobbs while on break- and meal-time. When confronted with evidence that documents the true extent of these efforts, Mr. Dobbs advised CNN that he is in negotiations for possible employment with Fox News. While we encourage that move, please advise employees to not ‘tease’ Mr. Dobbs about this issue. ….

"(6) The CNN employee policies regarding racial, ethnic, and religious slurs will be strictly enforced. A second and final written warning was given to Mr. Dobbs in regard to his comments on Soledad O’Brien’s series on "Black in America." Further, he has again been advised that he will not be allowed to produce an "opposing view" documentary, which he has proposed to highlight his beliefs that President Barack Obama is an undocumented alien. …."

The memo is signed by Jonathan Klein, who apparently has a high-ranking position at CNN. I’ve never heard of him before, but this document appears very official

From what I've seen of Dobbs lately, he seems to have a pretty weak grasp on reality.

7. I'd Love To Think This Is Real...
Klein is CNN President...the one who defended Doobies last week, but seems to be hot and bothered by all the criticisms of Doobies rather than how off the deep end that show has gone.

I used to watch Chicken Noodle Nuze 24/7 for over 20 years. While there were opinion shows like Crossfire, the news coverage was straight up...little, if any, commentary. But the days of Bernie Shaw, Judy Woodruff and real reporters/journalists at that network ended the day Time/Warner walked in. Since then it's chepened and then sensationalized their coverage. Today it's totally unwatchable. Doobies is a major reason. He long ago crossed the line of being news into opinion and vanity. He wasn't out to report...but to "prove". His xenophobia, racism and paranoia now pour from the teevee...and they wonder why his ratings have tanked?

CNN is a victim of the world it helped create. By trying to mix "enterainment" in with the news and to fill time with opinion rather than facts and information, this network has pissed off viewers from both sides of the political spectrum. There's zero Progressive voices on that channel and the Democrats who do appear are tired appologists who are easily steamrolled. Talking Points trump truth..."keeping them honest" only applies to Democrats.

I would imagine CNN's real policy is to ignore the whole situation and hope some other "outrage" comes up (preferably on another network). They pay Doobies too much...and management is loath to fire a big salary.

53. I used to be a CNN junkie as well
and for a short time I actually liked Lou Dobbs as he went after the Bush administration and corporate America. Then one day I saw clearly that his outrage was fake and he was just creating controversy to boost ratings. He doesn't believe in anything other than Lou Dobb's career.

I never turn on CNN anymore. As you say it is "unwatchable" these days - all glitz and no substance. And the sound of Wolf Blitzer's voice is enough to put a person to sleep!

Mixing truth with satire is disturbingly akin to disinformation. This doesn't strike me as funny because it's too easily taken as true. In fact, the only dead giveaway for me is that no exec would ever distribute this type of company information DOWNWARD.

46. The memo is just about as accurate as the Kenya birth certificate
Come on, now. Do you really think CNN management is going to put something like that on paper? Expect it not to leak? Think a "top secret" label will keep it "top secret" (whatever that means outside of the government)?

Do you really think CNN management gives a ratsass about what staffers think about Dobbs? All that matters is his ratings. If they do tank, so will he.

47. Well,
to be perfectly honest, and to give tribute to the man who deserves it, Abbie Hoffman once told me that when one wants to spread a joke, always put "Top Secret" on the top of it.

51. Step On A Crack, Break A Racist's Back
In the last 8 years truth has become stranger than fiction and vice versa. I heard Tweety say the other night that the left has their fringe group and then cited the 911 conspiracies as an example. The problem with that thinking is that there is a yes but....that could be attached. Because at least those theories had a foundation in truth to the extent that one could look at the Project for a New American Century and the Pearl Harbor quote and the fact that the only people flying out of the country that day were the Bin Ladens. You can see how the seed was planted. Not like the Australian man's birth certificate being heavy on white -out and used as proof that Obama wasn't born in Hawaii. So when beginning to read the OP I had to think if it was real or not.

It could be that you're psychic and in a few weeks or a month we'll find out what you wrotehappened last week.

57. My sad truth is that I wouldn't care if this was truth or satire watching Lou Dobbs sets my teeth on
edge. I don't always appreciate Roland Martin but last week Lou Dobbs tried to train this 'uppity' black man on how to conduct himself with the big boys. I could only image why he let this 'arrogant' man on the show to give his opinion since Martin didn't appear to understand the pecking order or the way of the Dobbs world.

He's a menace and CNN deserves a backlash in the same way Fox deserves some accountability for the Glenn Beck racist comments last week. If it sells and they get profits from their antics, they should also assume some liability for the excesses.

This is bizarre as hell. Lou Dobbs is really losing it. I used to watch him but a little over a year and a half ago he became unbearable talking about the case of the border guards that shot the guy in the back. That was when I realized what a racist dickhead he was.

85. I have reason to believe
that you are either an employee of CNN who worships Mr. Dobbs, or a private investigator with hundreds of years of experience in police science. Or, perhaps you are an alien, who is of a much higher level of intelligence and human decency than the rest of DUers (with but few exceptions).

If you are an alien, please document it now. Otherwise, Mr. Dobbs may target you. I'm sure that on the planetary level of consciousness that you inhabit, this seems a remote unlikelihood. Maybe you were the inspiration for the documentary "ET." But you are in our neighborhood, mister.

Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 09:39 PM by Gman
No company would mention anything even vastly remotely similar to this. There's entirely too much confidential information in this were it to be true. No company of the stature of CNN has an HR department and a legal department that would say it's OK to say the things said in this.

Sorry, it may look and sound official, but I assure you, it is not.

But I think you knew that already!
