Why publicans are against "cash for clunkers"
My dearly beloved came up with the real reason - and I thought it was too good not to share. The real reason pubs are against cash for clunkers is that they know that the next logical step is a trade-in program for crazy congresscritters, in which citizens can turn in their old, crazy (repug) congresscritters for a bright, shiny, new (dem) one.

1. Republicans are against it BECAUSE IT IS WORKING!
They want Obama to fail.

Some of the dealerships around here are running out of popular models. The local Ford dealer is totally out of the Focus.

7. ... and because it's largely going to "regular" people.
The GOP only likes govt. handouts if the money goes ONLY to the uber-rich.

2. Because they'll only get $4.5K trade-in on that behemoth they spent way too much for?
That's my guess. It ain't worth trading in that Pig Car they're driving, that they're still paying five hundred a month on, for the small, working/middle class rebate the program offers.

If the program had a sliding scale based on the original price of the car, up to ten grand, they'd be cheering like fans at the Superbowl. They're just pissed because they can't play without taking a bath, financially.

4. It's a dilemma for their "whatever it is, I'm against it" philosophy toward Obama.
Oops, it works, Americans like it. Opposing it might mean that the voting public will hold them responsible if they hurt or hold up the program.

6. Only problem is the paperwork is a nightmare
for the car companies, like any government job. My daughter is office manager of a large one and while she is glad they are selling more cars, she says the paper work on the employees (who get paid the same, its only the top owner and the sales guys on commission who gain on this) the poor office workers get hit with a nightmare.

They ought to make it in the program that all employees get a bit of the sale...

13. The other problems are ...
... that it perpetuates Americans love affair with the automobile; it does virtually nothing to reduce greenhouse gases emitted by automobiles (the Hummer qualifies under this plan); and the money would have been better spent on urban mass transit and interstate rail.

10. Because it wasn't their idea... just like they were aginst Clinton's anti-terrorism measures.
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 11:45 AM by redqueen
They don't care if it works... if it's a Democratic idea, they're against it.

Or... maybe for the same reason some people here are against it... who knows?
