Like most news anchors, I'll try not to mention that our borders remain more porous than a sieve, which allows terrorists to stream into our country at an alarming rate. Also, why should the average American broadcaster worry about all the jobs exported to China... Oh yeah, that's RED China, where the people filling those once lucrative positions make so little money they fail to qualify for benefits average communist nationals receive.

At least broadcasters have something important to talk about these days.

16. you didn't see them because you didn't go to the mall today...
That's the type of place they can strike with impunity. Also, try visiting large water reservoirs.

5. Sanctioning racism on the airways is "something important" to me
I can be outraged by someone calling talented young women whores AND by the fiasco in Iraq.

6. same here... but at some point other news might begin to filter through...
The Folley scandal got less coverage and probable child molestation strikes me as equally outrageous. Imus didn't make a judgment mistake. The whole thing comes across as contrived orchestration to keep simple minds focussed on anything other than the bigger picture.

7. Well, around here...
we already know about Iraq and the export of jobs. There's only a half hour, less commercials, to get us the new stuff before Letterman or Leno comes on.

Besides the earthshaking news about who the father is and yet another grovelscape from Imus, we actully do care about the weather tomorrow-- it may snow.

And we take a certain local pride in the Brooklyn Law student who made the news, but we're not so proud of the latest murderers around town.

Yeah, we gots out priorities.

8. I'm not talking about "us" here at DU... my OP is more about a lack of responsible journalism
For America to be fixed, media priorities must change. As long as mega-corporations own the news our society will spiral into ever-increasing trouble.

13. I'm not talkinga bout DU, I'm talking about...
meatspace, real life and such.

My neighborhood-- people I actually talk to.

Simple truth is that, even amongst the activists, nobody gives a shit about the minutae of Washington cockups. Somehow, even the Republicans around here have managed to figure out it's all screwed up down there, and they got that idea from somewhere. Maybe the news? Anyway, it is universally agreed around here that the present situation in DC sucks, and we don't need to read or watch any more about it.

We got one Democratic Senator running for President and one with a big mouth, neither of whom seem to be terribly interested in us. And, we got one fairly liberal Democratic Representative, who seems mildly interested in what we think. They can deal with Washington.

Nope-- we give a shit about zoning fights over windmills and greenhouses, traffic through town, mooring rights, and the local school budget.

9. wonder what Iraqis think about this Imus stuff
Iraqi people must be scratching their heads that americans will get into a hysterical emotional rage over some idiot's words, but hundreds of brown people die every day in Iraq and no one is doing anything.

15. what I keep thinking about thru this
and my apologies to all who say they can care about Iraq AND Imus at the same time. Sorry... what I've seen here and on the media is a type of self-righteous holier-than-thou figurative lynch mob zeroing in on Imus in an attempt to exorcise the demons of racism..all 'isms'.. that permeate our society... and if those who participate were honest.. exist even in a small way within themselves.

The best thing to come out of all this, is that maybe this time a serious look at racism will occur in this country. I'm not betting on it, though. Fire Imus..poof... racism disappears? That has to laughable to anyone.

In the meantime.. 'better to fight them there than here'.. exhibits the unmistakable racism of a country that truly, if unconsciously, believes hundreds of dead 'brown' people' is somehow better than deaths of Americans. No one sees this? From where I sit, no one has formed the kind of hysterical response about that, to any way compare to what has happened with this. In a way, that is understandable. This is something specific. We feel we can actually do something with this. It's small. It's focused. And we can heap all our frustration and disgust on our token racist. Problem is... Imus goes... and racism lives on.. with those most vocal feeling so holy and powerful... smoke and mirrors.

20. Excellent point Terri...
the MSM is like a pack of wild dogs on a wounded jackrabbit. There are examples of repugnant racism every single day, this is just cheap opportunism.

19. How has the media made that connection?
it seems to me all that they are focusing on is the sensationalism of it. The media is incapable of making a leap like that, and you know it.

undermining our security by successfully lobbying against container inspections. We actually have no idea what is being shipped into this country.
