My suggestion for the Unrecommend feature |
|
show the numbers as:
Recommend = 10 Unrecommend = 5 Votes = +5 or -5 whenever Unrecommend > Recommend

1. I WISH they would show the total Unrecommended votes. |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 11:25 PM by TexasObserver
Then some of these "it's the trolls killing my thread" posters would see that their threads really are unrecommend worthy.

11. That's a conclusion that probably isn't valid. |
|
Some threads about the topic are worthy of recommending, and some aren't. It's not the subject that makes a thread recommend worthy. Most topics are covered by many threads, and many of such threads suck.

You should 25 votes for each per week. You use them up, they are gone. You might think twice before you use either one?

13. How about limiting posters to starting 25 threads a year? |
|
That might stop the serial thread starters who can't understand why their threads about "here's my take on ..." might not be getting so many unrecommends.

25. I object to the fact that threads are allowed to get so long. |
|
I tend to read the threads that are already posted, but by the time I post a comment, it is at the bottom of the thread and I figure nobody ever reads down that far, so I start a new thread.
Usually, someone posts and then a lot of people make comments of one or two words or sentences that fill up the beginning of the thread. The more thoughtful comments are posted further down, but don't get read because everyone has to put in their quick comment. That is why so many people start new threads. Because they take a lot of time writing something thoughtful, but unless they post fast, their comments are not read or responded to.

26. They tend to degrade between 100 and 200 posts. |
|
That's when a handful of "you suck" "no, you do" subthreads render them useless.

4. What about giving a limited number of 'unrecs' you can do in a day? |
|
A small number, like 1-3 for members who don't donate, and an extra daily unrec for every $10 donation or something.

5. Oh god, who gives a fuck. |
|
I am so sick of threads about how to 'fix' the rec/unrec feature. Most people are happy with it as-is, as has been demonstrated in poll after poll.
Here's a suggestion: stop posting about, post about stuff that matters, become a moderator or a few quarters. Then pitch your idea.

14. Oh yes. It was obvious during the primaries |
|
when many were upset the way the site was run and said they were not going to contribute.
Personally, I think that the "U" allows people to by pass the rules saying not to go after other DUer. There are people here who get "U" as soon as they post, even if they just say "good morning."
And I think that the ones who "U" a thread without an explanation are cowards.
Yes, I know, many "R" without one, too, but the difference, again, is in the rules where we are expected to respect others and not to go after anyone.

How about having people post their opinions or information or both, and then others can add their comments. They have these little boxes you can type into.

we could use this like an opinion forum! You might be on to something. The posts with the most replies and numbers of people that have read them could be the most popular ones. Brilliant! I bet we could do that now without changing anything.

|
I don't use re/unrec for any decision I make to read or respond to something. I can't belive I'm even here. I'd rather read a post about switching from arial to times roman than about the scoring system.

24. I agree! Show both recommends and unrecommends. |
|
We are getting a lot of newbies who make absurd remarks. I suspect they unrecommend a lot. Show each count. Don't subtract unrecommends from recommends.

27. How many times is this idea going to be posted? |
|
Seriously, this is like the 30th time I have seen this exact same thread. The word has already came down from the admin. The unrec feature is staying as is, and no changes are going to be made.
People need to get over it.

30. I'm surprised this UnRec debate is still being dredged up. |
|
It's here, deal with it. It certainly seems that threads deserving of Recs get plenty of them and it also seems like far too many here obsess about the number of Recs or UnRecs that an OP gets. A thread that gets just a few Recs could be just as good as one that receives many. We all know there are some well-known posters here who will get a multitude of Recs based upon their reputation even if their OP says little.
