Are there any non-right-wing banks/credit unions?
I am so tired of cringing every time I have to go into my Credit Union (thankfully rarely) with Faux "News" on all 4 televisions there. I've complained and they temporarily changed, but now they don't even acknowledge my emails and I'm tired of it. Is there such thing as a "liberal" or "progressive" bank? I'm really tired of letting hate-filled people profit from my money.

and we have hundreds of televisions showing sports, racing from other tracks, news and the market watch.

We have a verbal agreement that the Market Channel will be CNBC and national news is CNN. No fox, ever.

Pretty good, ha.

You are apparently in the wrong place then - most people care about the fact that their country is being infested with psychotic right-wing nut bags.

12. they fought in court to be able to lie to their viewers and still call
themselves 'news'.

they are the perpetrators of massive confusion and hate-media that is programmed solely to distort the facts so that the corporations remain powerful and the people struggle - I hate seeing their "news" channel at doctor's offices, tire stores, school offices, etc.

These types of places shouldn't have that channel on, brainwashing the masses with their filthy lies. When we defeat them, we won't have worry about someone like B*sh becoming president!

you should be pissed off about them - they are the channel of Glenn Beck, Hannity, and O'Lielly - and they are disgusting.

4. try one near a university in a liberal area.
when i was married to a grad student in berkeley in the sixties, all the tellers all women were liberals! i worked for wells fargo and when there was a spontaneous march and our windows were all broken (by the tail enders of the march) the head teller (a rightwing man) yelled 'we ought to run the hippies off a plank' and we all looked at each other and laughed, cuz we were one.....

my credit union in port townsend was pretty liberal. all the coop members banked there, some were on their BOD. i still have my account there, thought i am in kansas

9. PT to Kansas, that's quite a change in scenery!
I spend every Christmas in Port Townsend; love that food co-op, and delight in the generally liberal atmosphere. I'd move there in a heartbeat if my bones weren't so cranky about humidity!

19. too late to move there, not because of your bones!
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 11:22 PM by create.peace
it has turned into a smug, yuppie or ruppie* place, compared to the vital, scrappy, somewhat unkempt place i loved enough to move there. i said when i left that i had to move because no one like me could move there any more, so what you saw was what you got. i still had a house there that we sold when all my children said they were 'done' with living there. no one i know could afford it when i sold it. they and we still visit, but it has lost its fascination. i even had gotten there a little on the late side, 1986 was when we actually bought there. the old co-op was great. small but everyone who shopped there really were members. now people join just to say they belong, not to help with the store. trust me, the original co-op is now co-opted. there are still a few people who work there who get it, but each time i visit the coop, it is visibly more trendy. when i moved there we had a penney's which operated in the black, but they closed it because of its size. we had a few other places you could by kid's shoes, and regular clothing. right downtown. and and and..... you can always visit, and it can be anything in your imagination, but don't believe for a moment it is still a liberal atmosphere. it is somewhat progressive, but if it weren't for a small dedicated bunch, places like the boiler room (an all age oasis) would have disappeared like all the other truly unique non-turisty things. like most beautiful women, its desirability has gone to its head.

*retired urban professionals

btw, there are many other beautiful places in this country, if that's what floats your boat.
and also, change is good, right??? i don't mention kansas much because i am sick of people acting like they know anything about living here. yes, i am a little defensive, you should have heard the comments from people in pt when i told them i was moving here. at least here, people say, 'oh, i hear it's lovely up there' - not anything derogatory about the northwest....

23. Nah, what 'floats my boat' is being able to sit at the
lunchcounter at Don's and have a conversation without having to duck brickbats from hovering wingers. It's very welcome respite from the town that seriously considered renaming a major roadway after Marilyn Musgrave. Besides, there's not too many places around here where I can enjoy a ginormous banana split and then walk it off while watching both submarines and schooners.

25. don's is the last remnant of old pt....
there are a lot of other places that are not marilyn musgrave (ever see lt. musgrave's dance?) supporting. i do know what you mean, but there is a lot of stuff about pt which isn't very open.

if you have health issues there are a lot of reasons to not move there. but you know that.

i am not going to make any suggestions, but colorado is chock full o'nuts and has been for years. but so is whidbey island! so near to pt....

hope you find your ideal place! if you are wealthy the world's your oyster....

27. Oh, my! I'm so far from wealthy
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 12:20 AM by madamesilverspurs
that I need binoculars just to find it in the dictionary! Actually, I'm a Colorado native. I got stuck for four years in a part of the country that had not yet admitted losing the "war of northern agression", and couldn't wait to get back here; I do love my Rocky Mountains. One of my closest friends here used to be stationed at Whidbey; he'd love to go back, but only if the Navy leaves first. First time I went out to PT we went through Pt. Gamble, and I was struck by how much it resembles the coast of Maine. If I was younger, in better health, better off financially and didn't have family obligations elsewhere I'd happily spend the rest of my years exploring the history in some of the places I've lived; I was always too busy paying the rent, it seems.

28. port gamble was suspended in time because the lumber company owned it. in all our
times driving through there (thousands) we NEVER saw a human being. we watched as they tore down a treasure of a mill, when they sold out. now you do see some people, but the gas station is a gift shop now. did you ever go to the shell museum on the upper floors of the socalled general store. well, if you aren't wealthy forget that area. when i moved there you could still buy a house uptown for 30k. my first one cost more than that but it was a turreted vic on two lots. the world is upside down now. only the rich or willing to go over their heads in debt can live in waterfront areas that have amenities. there's always the slabs, or salton sea....

10. What I find puzzling is why do these businesses feel the need to
have ANY TV on. Can't we wait in line for 2 minutes without having to be "entertained" or in this case brainwashed? I don't even like it when I have to get the car fixed. If I want entertainment, I'll bring a book or buy a newspaper and do a NYT crossword.

I also don't like bars and restaurants with TVs where no matter where you look, there is motion to catch your eye from flat screens hanging on every wall.

What kind of society do we have where we have to have this passive input all the time?

34. See my post #10 above. I don't understand it either. Watching TV in this country is
like some kind of addiction. It requires no input from the viewer; no interaction. I guess it doesn't require any thought and has the added "benefit" of bombarding the brain with constant propaganda.

Oddly, I worked in broadcast TV for over 30 years and now produce video for the legal community and I hardly ever have a TV on in my house and can't stand it in public places. 95% of the programming is dreck. And now it's in High Definition.

Not-for-profit, generally less vicious than banks, usually based within your own community.

Mine made "too much" money in 2008 and issued a dividend to all the shareholders/customers -- split something like $6 million among the members, I guess based on balance in share accounts.

My CU doesn't have TVs playing in the customer area, while my PNC branch tends to have Oprah or soap operas playing during the day rather than news. I find it a little unprofessional, but beats Faux news.

Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, an organization that has always done me right. Several years ago I got behind on my AKUSA VISA card for a few months, but they worked with me all the way through until I got current, didn't report me to any agency, never raised my rate (10.5%), and increased my credit limit. It continues to be a pleasure doing business with them.

If you look under "financial" in the categories, there is a listing for banks and credit unions. It has been a great resource for me.

30. My local bank had local news on TV today
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 01:16 AM by fujiyama
I am so much happier with them than Chase. I'm thinking of closing down my Chase account completely (they've wrongly charged me multiple times for all sorts of crap) and moving all my money over.

I also had my card stolen and immediately reported fraudulent transactions and they were really cooperative and said the money would be reimbursed in two days. Unfortunately my bank is only located in MI. I'd look for a credit union in a college town or relatively left leaning town. Just look around. Personally, I would care less about their politics and more about whether they're going to give a decent interest rate (though it sucks pretty much everywhere still), their financial soundness, their fees for things like a minimum balance and stuff like that (a big one to look out for)...

Check out the following site for some great finds on money market and checking account deals:
