The Democratic Party Already IS Bipartisan
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 11:25 AM by berni_mccoy
Republicans voted for both Obama and Democrats in Congress in large numbers.

According to the 2008 exit polls ( http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/president/national-exit-polls.html ), 20% of Conservatives voted Democratic. When you consider that conservatives made up 34% of the electorate (Liberals only held 21% according to the same exit polls), that's 7% of the electorate that are not Liberal or Moderate who voted for Obama.

Meanwhile, 26% of the electorate who voted Democrat came from Moderates and 20% of the electorate came from Liberals.

Obama wouldn't be President today if he didn't have bipartisan support.

Congress would not have a Democratic majority if they weren't elected in a bipartisan way.

The bipartisan country voted to put these people in place so they would do what we needed them to do: Pass Health Care Reform with a Strong Public Option. It is no wonder that 80% of the country now supports a public option. As more and more people see the benefits this would bring to all of America they are ignoring the hyperbole of fear from the Insurance companies and the GOP.

1. I don't believe Americans elected the Democrats
so they would play nice with the Republicans. People want Congress to get shit done, and they don't care if it hurts the Republicans' feelings. Bipartisanship is not a priority with most people.

7. Bipartisanship is a "means to an end". It does NOT deserve to be the end goal itself!

You don't get money just to get money. You get money in some instances to increase the value of your life or others' lives through what it purchases.
You don't get food just to have a lot of food. you get food to contribute to nurturing your body to be strong and grow and live a long decent life.

You don't look to be bipartisan just to say you're "bipartisan". You're bipartisan in some instances to help you get other things done that you and your friends value.

8. Yes, and that's exactly what it's come to.
We're supposed to do away with a public option (and therefore do away with reform) so that the Republicans will feel comfortable enough to vote for it. In order to save the bill, we have to kill it. Meanwhile this hole we have only gets deeper. That kind of bipartisanship is disastrous.

5. Multi-partisan
Might be a better way to put it.

Liberals, progressives, blue dogs, centrist... I'm sure we could slice and dice the party in many ways.
