Yesterday I took my sister to the local ER at her request. At about

9 pm she was transported to our neighboring town which has a larger hospital (we live in a small town,)

The doctor saw her last night and again this morning, and she had improved to the point they discussed sending her home tomorrow.

At about noon today I was checking the beef stew I was preparing for lunch, waiting on Miz O to get home from church. The doctor called. My sister had just died. She had sat up to get up to go to the bathroom, fell back onto the bed, had a seizure. They could not revive her.

I will miss my sister.

45. She was 70 August 1st. They strongly suspect pulmonary

embolism. The ER diagnosed pancreatitis with infected gall bladder. She was diabetic and overweight. When they checked her blood suger at the ER it was 484.

I don't suspect foul play. The doctor is the same one who treated me when I had a heart attack several years ago.

She was a registered donor, so they are going to harvest whatever they could. No autopsy is being requested. I talked with her son by phone and he agreed with me. He is on his way, along with her two daughters.

Miz O and I spent most of the day with her in the ER yesterday, and Miz O called all three of sister's kids on her cell phone, so they all had a chance to visit by phone with their mom.

nurses station, and I know them both - both good people. One of them, can't remember which, asked if we would be requesting an autopsy. I told them unless it is required, it won't be necessary. Then we started discussing her being an organ donor. It was too late for major items, but there still could be some done that would be beneficial to someone. As of this writing, all that has been done, and the funeral parlor has picked her up.

Again, the apology is appreciated, but not necessary at all.

Thank you, but unfortunately, they are not useful for her.

She has an autoimmune disease of the biliary system. Because the biliary system is not working, it is slowly destroying the liver in concentric circles around bile ducts. What has not been destroyed functions well - but ultimately, there will be too little of it left to do the job the liver must do so that she can survive(and what is left will not have access to a functioning biliary tree).

Even hepatologists who support the use of nutrition and alternative medications in general (milk thistle - silymarin, for example) suggest that with this particular disease they are of little use because it is not the liver itself that is not functioning well.

(That said, as soon as the medical trial my daughter is in is completed I suspect she will add at least silymarin to her routine. Until the trial ends, though, she is restricted as to what other remedies she can try. What she can do - and has been doing - is trying to rid her diet of added chemicals and processed/refined grains and sugars. I have not seen that it is making a difference, but it does make her feel as if she has some control over a body that is spinning out of control.)

As to the other questions, it's too rare to know. They suspect some combination of genetic predisposition and pathologic trigger - likely some sort of gut bacteria since there is a very strong overlap with inflammatory bowel disease. Likely autoimmune - many folks who have it have a collection of autoimmune disorders. Currently no effective medical treatment - just symptom management until it is bad enough for a transplant.

You're right about encouraging people to be donors - my daughter identified herself as an organ donor a couple of years before she was diagnosed (making her the third generation to do so). For all but a few organs she can still be a donor even though she will also likely be an organ recipient - so, no excuses! (Even people rejected as blood donors can be organ donors.)

151. I lost my brother in this same fashion. Taken to the ER b/c he collapsed at his nursing home.

Stabilized, he went into a room on the floor but in the early morning he had a seizure. He was taken to the ICU and he went into lung collapse and heart failure not too long after. When I received the call, he was dying. The doctor tried to explain what was happening but I couldn't understand him as his English was so heavily accented.

I remember my own shock and sorrow so I can only reach out to you via DU to let you know that others have been in your shoes and know the pain you must be feeling. The helplessness. It is nearly indescribable...

A few years back I had a housemate who was having awful headaches for days. I took him into the emergency room. 10 hours later he called me, saying that he still hadn't been seen by a doctor, but asking me to bring him back to the house.
About three days later he collapsed in the street, the neighbors called an ambulance, and it turned out that he'd had meningitis.

It was nearly two months before he regained the power of speech. He was apparently more lucky than your sister, and I'm sorry for your loss. The details of the story are appallingly unsurprising though.
