Here comes the judge! Hometown history-maker Sonia Sotomayor was spotted inspecting her chalk portrait on the upper West Side.
Accompanied by fellow art lovers, the newly appointed Supreme Court justice stepped out of a car and eyeballed the sketch, which The News reported on last Monday. Designed by New York City sidewalk artist Hani Shihada, its home is on Broadway and W. 97th St.
When we asked Sotomayor for her ruling on the portrait, she took the Fifth. Meanwhile, a spokeswoman wouldn't provide any details, only confirming that “the justice did stop by.”
But we're pretty sure Sotomayor was impressed with the creation. During her visit, she looked pleased as she shook hands and spoke with onlookers. And by all accounts, New Yorkers agree it's a great addition to the neighborhood.
When baby-sitter Amy Speidel checked out the drawing, she gave it rave reviews - and used it as an opportunity to give her 2-1/2-year-old charge, Halleli, a lesson in history. “This woman is the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court,” she said. “Isn't it beautiful?”
