Kansas School District Bans T-Shirts Depicting Evolution

Posted by Faiz Shakir, Think Progress at 3:30 PM on August 31, 2009.

"I don't think evolution should be associated with our school," said one parent, who teaches in the district.

T-shirts worn by members of the Smith-Cotton High School band have been recalled by the (Kansas) school district because they contained images of evolution. The t-shirts featured an image of a monkey holding a brass instrument and progressing through various stages of evolution until eventually becoming a human. "I was disappointed with the image on the shirt," said Sherry Melby, a band parent who teaches in the district. "I don't think evolution should be associated with our school." Assistant superintendent Brad Pollitt explained that the t-shirts were banned because they were imposing on religious views:

Though the shirts don't violate the school’s dress code, Pollitt noted that the district is required by law to remain neutral on religion.

"If the shirts had said ‘Brass Resurrections’ and had a picture of Jesus on the cross, we would have done the same thing," Pollitt said.

Law professor Jonathan Turley notes, "Evolution is not a religious issue. Extremists want to make evolution into a religious question, but it is not."

1. These people need to go back to 1300 so they can stone witches
and be happily ignorant in the Dark Ages.

8. Well lets not involve math, or science, or english, or history - instead
lets just all pray that we magically become smarter. "God" will just miracle some knowledge into our heads I guess. These idiots in Kansas will make ANYTHING into a religious issue. I've seen it done in their ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS! Granted, this was from a private school but the question was like: "John Smith, a good christian and hard working father, plowed the field from dusk til dawn." Then the kids were told to name the adjectives in the sentence. WTF! Ugh if I did believe in a god - first thing i would do is thank him/her for NOT making me live in Kansas with these idiots. :eyes:

11. The regression of thought regarding evolution is frightening.
I remember school in the 1950s, grade school, when we first learned of evolution in a fundamentalist region of Texas. Even then, science was given deference in school. Even then, science had won the battle to represent thought in science class.

As society evolved in 1960s and 1970s, I don't think any of us ever believed America could return to the days when evolution could be challenged by creationists in public schools. I'm still shocked that these knuckle draggers have resurrected.
