She has thousands of people offering her money to talk?

:wow:

I'm just overwhelmed about this. I really, really don't get it.

8. No, over $100,000 per speech. I can't wait to hear how well she does.
I can't even imagine the reason why.

2. She's a celebrity -
a household name. A brand. A star.

Yeah, she's also an idiot, but if you want to attract a crowd, like it or not, Palin will do it.

I'm just as horrified as you, believe me, but I'm not surprised. And this is only the first...........................

26. How absolutely surreal!
When I wrote that comment, it was about 1:30 this morning. I had absolutely no knowledge about the Duggar expectancy at all. But this is yet another instance of precognition, something I have no control over at all.

13. I'm convinced speaking fees are just bribery
for favors done while the politician was previously in office. I guess they could also be bribes for future favors, if the politician is expected to return to the public sphere.

In the case of Palin, it could be both. Somebody should check if any of the companies offering her money won big contracts, tax breaks, or favorable legislation in Alaska while she was gov.

Mind you, he had just had a successful 8-year run, portraying the President.

16. I'd rather listen to 60 minutes of balloon flatulence
You know, when you slowly release the air by pinching the balloon hole. The kind of thing kids do to drive adults crazy. I'd rather listen to that, or rusty nails against a chalkboard, or Air Supply's Greatest Hits. Anything but that brain-dead whack-job ramble on.

Better idea, let's pay someone six figures to creatively shut her up.

There are millions of nutcases who hang on her every word. Whatever she has to say is a pathway into the minds (and wallets) of those people. So she's got all the intellectual powers of a cantaloupe, when has that ever made a difference in politics?

Let's put it this way, you're a lot more intelligent than she is, but she's a lot smarter than you (or I). You can make a very very good living just telling people what they want to hear, especially if you are reasonably physically attractive or have a witty turn of phrase.

Chauncey Gardiner with breasts. Whatever insipid thing she says is interpreted as profound genius and insight. (His simplistic, serious-sounding utterances, which mostly concern the garden, are interpreted as allegorical statements of deep wisdom and knowledge regarding business matters and the current state of the economy in America. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Being_There)

27. To legalise what would otherwise be bribery
If they're someone in charge of someone else's money (they run some foundation, of part of a university or something), then it's a way of channeling money in return for a nominal service that wouldn't be legal if they simply bribed her. They think there's a chance she may get influence, and they want their organisiation to get favours off her if she does.

It may also depend on whether it's people's own money, or someone else's. If the people offering her the money are giving it out of their own pockets, it's bizarre, and indicative of them being nutjobs, as well as right wing.

Sarah should get at least that much. Heck, liberal organizations should be the ones offering her gigs. Sarah babbling on film for 45 minutes non-stop? Priceless.
