42. Good old Psalm 127
Edited on Tue Sep-01-09 08:43 AM by Recursion
"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate."

Oddly, it's mostly women that describe their quivers as being full (at least if you can trust the blogs -- conservative Christian women blog incessantly, and some of them incredibly well; the men, not so much), despite the language of the Psalm.

117. Read Psalm 127
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed,
but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

The Duggars are adherents--perhaps the most famous adherents--to the Quiverfull movement, which calls for having as many kids as you can, just as fast as you can. If you're a QF, as they sometimes call themselves, you strive to get pregnant again just as soon as you've recovered from the last pregnancy. IIRC it takes six to eight weeks to get the muscles back to the point where the kid won't just fall out (shades of the "Miracle of Birth: The Third World" segment of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, so you're looking at one, perhaps two children in a single calendar year.

I think this is extremely irresponsible behavior in that it can't be good for the woman, the siblings who wind up raising the children, the environment, the kids themselves, and I'm certain when God said to be fruitful and multiply he didn't mean "multiply until you're past the point of being able to care for your kids properly, then have three or four more."

54. I have a friend on my "Moms" group who was given a
complimentary tubal ligation at the time of her c-section - unapproved by her or her husband and un-noted on the pre-op paperwork. She said the doc and his staff kept asking since this was her 3 daughter, didn't she want them to do a ligation while they had her open. Needless to say, they're taking action against the doctor.

Something like *THAT* should happen to Mrs Duggar. She's nuts! She probably needs to have her girly bits sewn shut so they don't fall out too early. She must be on IV calcium and iron supplements. My OB said that, if you do nothing other than normal healthy diet (meaning no additional supplementation), that it takes a woman's body 2 yrs to fully recover from childbirth. If pregnancies are closer than that, they need to pay extra attention to nutrition/supplementation.

If they actually cared about children in general, they would have adopted a boatload of them.

If they actually cared about their own children, they would have stopped a while ago.
How can parents spend any quality time with one of 16? 17? 18? 19?
And the older kids have probably been mother's helpers since they could walk.

But hey - if it gets you a tv show, right? :eyes:

i find myself torn... because they should have the ability to choose to have so many kids, I guess, and then on the other hand I feel it to be kind of irresponsible to have that many kids. I have five siblings and I remember my older sisters taking care of the rest of us. I guess it's their business.... but then why do they have to go on national tv and announce every pregnancy?? I am pregnant too. can i go on national tv and tell everyone all about it?? granted, i am almost done now... due in a couple of weeks. but this is number three, so i guess it's not as noteworthy as it would be if it were number 19. I have a cousin who is going to have number 10 soon... maybe she should get media attention too.

When the child is born, the oldest daughter not already taking care of a child is assigned the care of the newborn. The Duggars (like most "Quiverful" families) believe that will prepare the daughter for their future intended role as a wife and mother.

56. Duggars = freaks
They seriously creeped me out this morning on the Today Show, especially the way that daughter-in-law called her mother-in-law "Mrs. Duggar". Seriously, who does that? It tells you a lot about the family dynamics! :eyes:

And the way that Meredith was sucking up to them made me grateful I don't eat breakfast! :puke:

Why are freakishly large families so popular? I think it's horrifying and completely irresponsible for people to bring so many children into the world. And it seems to be mainly religious nutbags, which is the LAST thing we need. I've always been a live-and-let-live person as far as religious beliefs go, but lately I've developed a strong aversion to organized religion--especially evangelical Christians. I can't think of an ideology that's more detrimental to all of us.

102. Why is that alien?
My wife calls my mother by her last name. The two aren't even remotely close to each other. That sort of thing isn't abnormal in in-law relationships where there is little or no actual friendship.

grown up with such formality and in fact, find it exceptionally uncomfortable. My parents' friends were "aunts and uncles". or I addressed them by their first names as I did my mother-in-law. Same with my siblings and their in-laws, as well as everyone else I knew/know. But hey, I'm a NYer and I guess we're familiar like that.

My wife is on a first name basis with my dad, who adores her. My mother, on the other hand, wouldn't mind me becoming a widower. My wife shares the same opinion in regards to my mother. The relationship is formal because the formal relationship is all that exists between them.

I keep looking for the little :sarcasm: emoticon, but I don't see it! Having that many kids demonstrates an utter lack of concern for others and of the planet in general. But who gives a rip, right, as long as they're following God's Will!?! That type of selfishness and short-sightedness is what infuriates me about fundamentalists. It excuses them from taking any responsibility for anything. "Quiver full" my Aunt Fanny. Full of shit is more like it.

Sure, if they go out and start robbing banks or killing kids or any sorts of other bad shit then they should be held responsible and should not use a "God's will" excuse.

They aren't doing that. They're having kids and for all we know they're teaching them to be good people and teaching them right from wrong. I'm not going to fault them for just "being fundamentalists" because they aren't going around telling other people how to live or believe based on their beliefs.

The number of kids someone has doesn't matter, it's how they're brought up and the impact they make on the world.

But aside from that, without massive welfare from government and private citizens they would all be starving to death. She might have given birth to 18 kids but less than a third of them would be alive... if it wasn't for that handout.

I also agree with those who say it's none of our business how many kids they have. They seem to be able to support them (without government assistance), the kids are educated and seem happy. Would I want that many children? No way. But it's not up to me to tell anyone how many children they can bring into the world. Just like it's none of my business to tell a woman if she can or can't have an abortion.

One thing that I may support is that after a certain number of kids you can not take them as a deduction on your income tax, or have some type of sliding scale after a certain number of kids as to what you can deduct on your income tax. But again, it's not up to me to tell anyone how many kids they can have.

I checked Wikipedia... looks like the Dad is a former state legislator who make real-estate investments during the real-estate balloon that enabled him to make enough money to keep his kids fed and housed. And he and his wife started one of those "financial freedom" seminars, so that might have made him some cash as well. Then he got a nice big house from the Discovery Channel and some other corporate sponsors before the balloon deflated, so that's nice as well.

. . . of a sort. They have declared their family a church so they can pay no taxes. Best argument for undoing that bullshit once and for all. Otherwise, we all need to declare ourselves deities and get going on that paperwork so we can get equal treatment.

Obviously, these QF cretins took a page from the catholic church (do muslims do this, too?) and it's a race to see who can choke out the planet first. Will they reach a point where war is inevitable? If so, will there be space for the rest of us to sit out Armageddon until they've wiped each other out?

I don't think you make money from the "financial freedom" seminars cause the whole point of it is to get out of debt so they do it as a free service to their church.

Sure, they got perks from Discovery Channel but they are in no way a drain on the community or asking for handouts.

Jon and Kate on the other hand give talks at churches around the country where they pass around the collection plate for them and sell autographed pictures for $20 each. The Duggars don't do that kind of stuff.

really not rationally arguable as an issue of impact.

More and more couples and individuals are exercising their choice and option to remain childless all the time. The growing contingent of childless by choice, an option previously not very practical in history, more than offsets the few families who choose to have many children.

I do not disparage reproductive choice, period.

If just one couple has 20 children and each of those children has only half the children of their parents, then we're talking one couple, the Duggars, adding TWO FUCKING HUNDRED & TWENTY people to the population in just two generations. By the time Mr. and Mrs. Duggar are in their dotage there's no telling how many descendants they may have. This is about taking some freaking responsibility for the planet, not just gratifying some need to be "happy" no matter what the consequences. The Duggars are already making carbon footprints the size of Montana, but hey, let's let hundreds more of them do the same, all the while thumbing their nose at any notion of personal responsibility. After all, why worry about stupid things like global warming, conservation, et al when Jeebus has commanded you to make it your mission to fill every square inch of the planet with more humans.

If you can't get THAT, then I understand why you can't ken why people are FED UP with this kind of freaking selfishness.

Edited to add: And taken to its extreme, if each of the Duggar's children would have 20 children, that's 400 GRANDCHILDREN. Now extrapolate that yet another generation. Do you get the math? Do you get it now?

122. Just because their kids grew up in big families doesn't mean they'll want one.
My grandmother was one of 23 and by the time she got married, she already spent enough time raising little brothers and sisters. My dad was an only child. Several of her brothers and sisters chose to remain childless, most had two kids, one had four kids.

126. Well in that case then, it must be time to escalate even more war.
Edited on Tue Sep-01-09 01:14 PM by Melinda
Gosh, just imagine how much carbon foot printing would be saved with the deaths of millions more people (as long as they aren't OUR people)! OR, how about in 'Merica we pursue forced sterilization of parents receiving public assistance, and/or implimentation of those pesky death panels? :sarcasm:

One can extrapolate the above kind of numbers ad infinitum, but your argument doesn't negate the liberal principles I believe in. I can't and won't carry a banner proclaiming pro-choice for some, or life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for a chosen few. As long as the Duggars responsibly and financially parent their children, then I'll stand behind their choice to do so.

Reproductive rights rightfully apply across the political spectrum - not just the left.

And finally - We may disagree, but I'd never speak/write to you on a message board as if you were somehow less than I... I've never believed in talking down to a person or dismissing them because their opinion is diametrically different from my own. I GOT your argument long ago, and while full of merit, it or others leveled does not, imo, justify the animosity toward the Duggars on this thread.

*Edited to add 2nd sentence, sarcasm smilie, and restructure a sentence.

129. Maybe you ought to examine your own hypocrisy
Comparing a call for some shred of reproductive responsibility to a wish for war and murder to kill millions? That's exactly the kind of crap that frustrates people such as myself who would even DARE to broach the subject of overpopulation and personal responsibility, even here on DU.

Being disgusted by the kind of selfish, reproductive irresponsiblity exhibited by the Duggars is no more at odds with being a liberal than being disgusted by any number of self-serving behaviors that are turning this planet into a flaming cesspool. The fact that the Duggars themselves are exploiting their selfishness for profit and encouraging others to follow in their footsteps is sickening.

Despite what some might believe, being "a liberal" doesn't mean you simply throw any notions of personal responsibility into the trash heap. Quite the opposite.

134. In my haste to get out the door, I inadvertently omitted the sarcasm smilie.
My bad, it's there now along with a 2nd sentence calling for death panels and forced sterilization (edited late as I was rushing out the door when I posted that response).

Did you/do you really believe that I was calling for war and death? Honestly?

I'll not back down from agreeing with AG; I don't understand the demonizing toward the Duggars, nor the personal animosity shown to me by you. "Personal responsibility" is just that - personal. Tossing ugly diatribes and hate speech around on a message board isn't going to change the world, nor bend the Duggars and their like to your call for "Personal responsibility".

Demonizing is what Beck, Bachmann, O'Reilly and Palin do. So in the immortal words of John Lennon, "When you talk about destruction, don't you know that you can count me out". Or like my mama used to say "You get more flies with honey then you do with vinegar". Want to send a message? Leav out the "demonizing. That's MY point.

Take care, I am out.

Feigning concern for children has been a means to that end but I wouldn't make the mistake of thinking they actually give a shit about all these children once they're born.

170. No, "The Duggars" are not pregnant.
Mrs. Duggar is pregnant. The last I heard, men still cannot become pregnant. Unless Mr. Duggar is a sea horse or a formerly female transexual, there is no "are" about this. Sorry for being so cranky about this, but I'm a biologst, and hearing that a couple is "pregnant" drives me crazy.

173. Why the hate?
These people are not on public assistance, not abusive, and seem happy. I don't understand why there are people on this board who dislike the Duggars choice to have as many children as they want? The Duggars might be famous, but they are not uncommon. My 45 year old cousin is a conservative Christian and has 11 kids. All of the kids are happy and healthy. A coworker of mine is a "motivated Baptist" and has 10 kids, all home schooled. His wife will probably have even more children.

I live in the San Francisco Bay area, where I see a ton of 30 somethings, single with no kids. Personally, I think the Duggars are a breath of fresh air.
