Dallas Morning News: Kinky's back, and this time he's a Democrat
08/31/2009

Humorist and author Kinky Friedman says he's running for governor again, this time as a Democrat.

Friedman, in an interview with The Associated Press on the eve of his formal announcement, described himself as a "true populist." He said he's offering Democrats a new, winning model, noting that the last Democrat to hold the Texas governorship was Ann Richards in the early 1990s.

Friedman planned to make his announcement official in a series of interviews Tuesday, but described his plans to the AP on Monday.

He said he wants to give teachers a $3,000 across-the-board pay raise and get rid of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills standardized testing for public school students. He said there are too many toll roads in Texas and that he would prefer to pay for roads with tax revenue from legalized casinos in certain parts of the state, such as Galveston.

Friedman said he's planning a fundraiser with Willie Nelson later this month and that he hopes to raise money from thousands of supporters online, like he did when he ran as an independent in 2006. That year Republican Rick Perry won, and Friedman was fourth.

"It's really time for Texas to secede from Rick Perry," Friedman said.

Nothing against Kinky, but if he's the frontrunner, Texas is in trouble.

9. That's up to we Texas Democrats
As soon as I can afford it, I plan to start making regular donations to his campaign - Obama style, in small monthly increments.

We sure as hell can't expect any national Democratic entities will support our candidate, that's for damned sure.

But if there is no credible Democrat running, what difference does it make? How can the Texas Democratic Party be gummed up any worse than it already is?

These politically correct assholes on DU really get to me. They will attempt to tell you when you can have an opinion. They will attempt to tell you what to watch on TV. They will attempt to tell you what politicians are assholes and which are not. I know Kinky Fiedman is a crazy bastard. I also know that Texas voted for George W Bush for Governor. You think he was better than Kinky Friedman? I read a lot. I just disagree with what you read.

And having Willie Nelson support him means he'll take a progressive position on the legalization of a certain substance.

But he'll never be able to keep his cowboy boot out of his mouth for an entire campaign.

Last time he came out with a racial slur and self destructed.

That's for sure -

KBH - same deal. Texas Zen: Whatever Texas is doing right now is exactly enough to give us what we have.

If we want something different, we need to do something different. More of the same just yields more of the same. I don't know a whole lot about Kinky other than he's different and his heart seems to be in a better place, regardless of where his mouth leads him.

If he's the opposition candidate then that's who I'm voting for. :hi:

All you praising this ego maniac, knock yourself out. I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

you think this asshole is "suddenly" a Democrat?

I have a warehouse full of bridges to sell you.

Let me clue you in about kinky if you don't already know.

If it's not about kinky, kinky doesn't want to hear about it, and if you are talking about something other than kinky, he will make sure that you will either shut up or make you talk about him.

This self centered "man of the people" is nothing but a colossal blowhard with a thimble full of brains.

if that is who you want to support, fine, but please don't call yourself a Democrat if you do.

I know of what I talk, I had to work with this fool a few years back.

he's nothing but a pontificating jackass.

It floors me that anyone here has anything good to say about the man as a politician.

As a comedian? Sure, if that's your thing, guffaw away... but supporting the man as a politician? Anyone doing that better not have SHIT to say about Californians who voted for Arnie... cause it's the same celebrity-worshipping, thought-challenged 'rationale' driving the support.

17. What a piece of CRAP he is!1 He's got two things going on:
Edited on Tue Sep-01-09 09:29 AM by UTUSN
1) His IMUS-like chip on the Redneck shoulder, having resentment towards anybody who doesn't speak with a twang, having to prove that he is SO creative---writer, musician, artist, composer.

2) As quoted in the o.p., an "If I ruled the world" college-type bull session.

As for somebody saying (above) that Libertarians are his base, well, it was also (last time) the idiot "liberal" STUDENTS who have fallen for the "Both parties are the same" crap for years. They just LUERVED his campaign posters, the pastel sillohuete thingy that was SO artistic!1 More than likely he will have less of an impact this time around. Even the idiot students should be able to see that somebody who is opportunistic about changing party labels is just a jerk.

All he and the Carole KEATON-RYLANDER-STRAYHORN (& other spouses's surnames), mother of the McCLELLAN boys, did was to split the opposition and get Governor GOODHAIR elected with, like, THIRTY percent of the vote. The teachers voted for Grandma STRAYHORN-McCLELLAN.

As for somebody asking about a "real Dem with a chance, not REAL. The supposed front runner, with endorsements from the state Dem legislators is one Tom SCHIEFFER, Bob's brother, who was another one of the brains behind Shrub, who ran the Rangers baseball business deal while Shrub posed for pictures out front. Shrub appointed him to two plumb ambassadorships, but this SCHIEFFER dude claims to have been a lifelong Dem voter---well, except for those couple of times Shrub ran.

20. This got me SO pissed, this is the e-mail I just sent his website:
Why doesn't Kinky BUTT OUT of politics and go off to some therapy spa with fellow idiot IMUS, so the two of them can work out their Redneck-chip-on-the-shoulder issues in a jacuzzi with whatever chemicals they want to ingest.

All you and Grandma STRAY-McCLELLAN did last time was to ensure GOODHAIR could get elected with THIRTY percent of the vote. You are SCREWING WITH PEOPLE'S LIVES, all for the sake of "proving" how smart and creative you are, proving it TO THE EASTERN MEDIA ELITE who are SO intimidated by you that they can't call you the CLOWN you are.

Get the F out!

18. I would bet..
that he would do better than any "Democrat" that has run in recent years. Just a hunch, but Texans, like most Americans, do not like milquetoast politicians that straddle the fence and cannot take a stand. That has been a major weakness of Democrats in Texas for quite some time. They will vote for Kinky simply because he has the balls to speak up. It doesn't matter if he's crazy...

28. You live in Texas?
You work for Democratic candidates here? You try to convince people that Kinky's roadshow isn't what all Democrats want or will do?

When you come here and try to get progressive candidates elected in the places where we can with hard work and serious campaigning do so, then you can have an opinion. You want this fuck-up for candidate in your state? Write him a letter. Offer him some money and come coke and he'll come.

All he does here is help Rick Perry and the horde of republican cock roaches that infest our districts.

"Schieffer has been struggling to win over hard-core Democrats because he was business partners with former President George W. Bush and served in his administration as ambassador to Japan and Australia, where he had to defend the policy of indefinite detention of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba." (from news link on his web page)

Hmmmmmm.

Whichever "democrat" and yes those are quote you see, looks more likely to win is who I'm supporting, and since I will have my fingers pinching my delicate nostrils closed either way, it won't matter much to me other than to get a dem in office.

I hope it's him. Richard and I will probably be regulars at his formal fundraisers if he vets out.

But if by some odd twist of fate Texas puts Kinky way ahead I will change horses in favor of the potential winner. I no longer know what the real deal is, but my inner machiavelli says the one that can consistently build momentum and consensus is the horse to back - and that will get proven out in the preliminaries.

that he won't get my support for Texas Governor. For one, he's not a democrat and two he's a total opportunist.
I'm also very hesitant to throw my support behind anyone who had close Bush ties. One thing I know for sure, no support for Kinky from me.
So far Hank Gilbert looks promising.
