What's the name of the phenomenon that says it's impossible to distinguish between religious parody |
|
and real religious arguments? And while you're at it, what are some of the best debunking arguments for anti-gay marriage idiocy? Specifically for now, the biblical arguments and the arguments for why it's not possible to give equal rights unless it's actually called marriage.
The Google is letting me down! When will it start being able to read my mind?!?!
Thanks for your help!!

4. Thanks for your help, but there's a specific term |
|
that says that "real" religious "debate" is virtually indistinguishable from religious parody.

Looking for a specific term?
EDIT: You had a second question.
If God is all knowing and omnipotent, then he not only knows of gravity, nuclear fission, the DNA strand as well as acceleration/inertia, he invented all that. As everyone knows that the more intelligent, educated and knowledgeable you are, the less likely you are to believe in stupid things, especially things that are bigoted and irrelevant. That's the very definition of small mindedness.
So if God created the universe, and all of the physical properties that make the universe work, and if he is so intelligent and omnipotent, then why would he/she/it/them actually giving a shit that 2 guys get hitched on this small rock floating on the edge of a not so special galaxy among the other billions in the universe?

I have so much trouble remaining calm and reasonable when faced with this sort of thing. It's a good thing I'm not talking to these idiots in person; I'd be sputtering with rage and not doing the cause any good.
Here's the exchange that has me scrambling (in response to an article I posted on Facebook about VT's new equal marriage rights law):
(Husband's great aunt): Ugh! They are sinning.
(Husband's great aunt): I believe in them having equal rights, but not in marriage to each other. Marriage is meant to be only between a man and woman. about an hour ago ·
(Douchebag with whom I went to high school): Bah! pretty soon PETA will be fighting to be able to marry their animals!!!
(Me): (Douchebag), I'm so sorry, but I can't tell if you're being serious or if you're doing a brilliant parody of a homophobe. Forgive me for not being able to distinguish between real religious "debate" and parody! There's a name for this phenomenon, but I can't think of it right now!
Little help?
(Douchebag): nope not a homophobe, just get tired of hearing about it, especially in California, which is the best example. A lot got married when San Fran started doing weddings and they fought and fought to get it on the November election ballet. The people of California voted and same-sex marriage did not pass, now over and over again I have to hear about ... Read Moreprotests in regards to same-sex marriage. They battled to get it on the ballot now they are complaining that it did not pass. I say whatever, civil union, same-sex marriage what does it matter it's all the same!

7. During times of great social upheaval... |
|
uneducated people, and people who have little control over their incomes trust no one... but revert back to their childhoods.. and most of them were raised in patriarchal, authoritarian systems.
Their lack of education leaves them with a literal view of life; without the critical thinking skills developed during a real education, they can't think 'out of the box.' If they were brought up to believe that the Bible is God's honest, literal word to them personally, that's all they have.
Arguments that debunk homophobia? Best start with what they trust is totally: the Bible.
IF they believe that the Bible says that gays are against the commandments, then they better not eat shrimp or shellfish, cause that's forbidden too. Stay outta Red Lobster.
The Bible forbids fornication, so don't go fooling around with Bobbie Sue behind the barn, or you'll burn in hell.
The Bible says that if your son rebels against you, you must kill him... well, they might do that one.
The scripture says all divorce is wrong... and most of these underclass folks have had 2 or 3 marriages.
There's also laws about keeping the SAbbath, and anyone who doesn't is anathema. But Sabbath is Saturday worship, and no work at all....sounds good to me..
The Bible also says we should take care of all foreigners... that means immigrants. And care for widows, orphans and the sick and those in prison.
There are strict rules about bathing.. and cleanliness....and about animals.
I could go on... but enuff already!
Most of the folks who haul out the Bible pick and choose what they want to hear and believe. The best defence is a good offense; if you show you know the scripture, they can't fight you...
I've been doing this a while.. preached my Sunday sermon this week while wearing rubber gloves (about the purity laws)... they were laughing and loving it, yet admitted they certainly had something to think about...

One of my favorite tactics is using their bible-thumping against them! I just wish I knew more about the bible!
The very first atheist I met in my entire life (at age 18!) had read the bible countless times and it was just so he could argue with uneducated idiots who pick out one or two bible verses that reinforce their bigotry then don't bother reading any further. How I wish I could find him! He has a special place in my heart! Before meeting him, I thought all atheists were mentally ill. What a fucked-up upbringing I (and so many others) had!
