Palin Punked?

Many scratched their heads when it was announced Sarah Palin had been invited to speak in Hong Kong at an investment broker's conference. Huh? As mayor, Palin left her hometown of Wasilla $20 million in debt. Her mastery of finance wasn't tested as governor; during her aborted term, the state was flush with cash.

Finally, the Business Insider explained it: "Hong Kong Broker Pulling a 'Borat' on Sarah Palin":

Her invitation as keynote speaker in Hong Kong is so ridiculous that its absurdity can't be accidental.

CLSA, the Asia-focused broker who invited Mrs. Palin as keynote speaker for an Asian investment conference, is well known for their cheeky takes on investment research.

In the past, they've polled Asian fortune tellers for index targets, hired anime cartoonists to draw Japanese research, and generally love to push the boundaries between entertainment and analysis. They are a real research firm, it's just that they love to sprinkle in some hilarity every now and then as a smart marketing gimmick.

Palin probably doesn't know what she's in for. If you will, she's being "Borat'ed" and doesn't have the Asia knowledge to realize it.

Sarah Palin has a history of pulling a series of "Lucy with the football" for different organizers who have scheduled her to speak. If CLSA's purpose is comic relief in hiring her, they may get their moneys worth... that's if she shows up. The CLSA may want to hire William Shatner as a translator. Asian word salad, anyone?

3. That confirms what I thought yesterday - she is invited to speak
to be the comic relief. No one could be taking this seriously - except for Palin who is obviously too stupid to know that she is now a universal joke.

Oh this would be priceless. I was wondering why she'd be invited to an Asian investment conference. This explains a lot.

6. I think I know how the translations will go.
Palin: "As you know, I was a fiscal conservative as mayor of Alaska, I said 'NO' to that bridge, remember?"

Trans: "In the backwater settlement in Alaska where I was the witch doctor, I told the US government, 'NO, we don't NEED anymore squid', and then got very drunk."

Palin: "John McCain picked me for being a Maverick, just like him. He knew we would take on those big government programs and big government deficits and just, you know, do whatcha gotta!"

Trans: "The old fart with bad flatulence picked me because I was a bigger idiot than a Panda in a rice field."

7. Nah, Sarah's too smart for that
I'm guessing that she only agrees to show up for organizers that are foolish enough to send her an advance. She cashes the check, then begs off from her obligation, and the organizers are too embarrassed to admit that they were stupid enough to send her money up front. So unless CLSA is willing to pay for Sarah and her full menagerie to go to Hong Kong (or wherever), she won't show up or even tell them that she'll show up.

9. The full menagerie...
According to local rumors, Sarah has moved out of the Wasilla house, where at least Willow is staying with Todd, and is currently in New York "writing her memoirs." Bristol was seen at the Alaska State Fair a few days ago. No word on the two younger kids, but it may be that Sarah has left the menagerie behind.

Just rumor...don't sue me.

17. That would be bad news
Sarah's memoir is going to get decidedly shorter if she can't trot each and every member of her family out for their turn around the center ring to show her dedication to her family and how wonderful her family values are if she up and leaves them. And if her memoir is reduced to 250 pages of whining about how the evil librul media broke up her happy family, methinks it's not going to have very wide appeal. Well, she'll always have bulk sales and giveaways (First prize, an autographed copy of Sarah: My Story. Second prize, two autographed copies).

15. Priceless
Bar tab for the prankster and buddies planning this - $300. One way airplane ticket delivered to Palin's hands - $800. Look on her face when she is asked by the press why she is denied admittance to the event - priceless.

23. And here I assumed it was CLSA that was being punked!
I could not for the life of me figure out why a supposedly prestigious, successful brokerage firm in far-off Hong Kong could possibly want an election loser who walked out on her governors' job and who has demonstrated repeatedly that she has no depth whatever in finance or any other area to come all the way from America to speak to them on a subject they know so much more about than she does. "Is she that pretty?" I wondered.

This news puts the whole thing in a different light, to say the least.
