The Fox Is On The RUN! Fox Buckling Under Loss of Advertisers
From http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/9/1/775324/-Fox-Refuses-to-Honor-Binder-s-Request-to-Pull-Beck-Ads

In a recent diary I detailed a response from Binder & Binder concerning their policy in regards to Glenn Beck. The advertising coordinator, Mr. Summers, explained that Binder & Binder had instructed Fox News to remove its ads from Beck's program. Since Binder & Binder uses a Run of Schedule (RoS) advertisement scheme, Fox retains the right to assign ads; however, convention generally dictates that networks honor their advertisers' requests.

That response came August 28th. On August 31, Fox News ran two Binder & Binder ads in a single broadcast of the Glenn Beck show.

So, what happened?
...
This is the response I received:

Under our present contract, I simply can't control where Fox news puts the Binder and Binder commercials.

This refusal is telling. Fox can no longer depend on a large stable of wealthy advertisers to fill in should a RoS advertiser ask to opt out of a specific program. Despite frequent calls of irrelevance by Fox and other media organizations, the movement against Glenn Beck is working. Fox has become defensive, struggling to retain even the small RoS advertisers left. It cannot sustain this steady loss of advertisers, especially if those advertiser start dropping Fox entirely (as Binder & Binder has threatened to do if Fox doesn't honor its requests).

WOOHOO! Fox is not honoring requests by Run-of-Schedule advertisers to pull their ads from Becks show. They must be really hurting to go to this length.

We must keep up the pressure!

2. FAUX on the run?
Too bad half the members of Sweet are dead. it would be a good excuse for a reunion. These lines from the song sure fit that "news" network though...

OK you think you got a pretty face
But the rest of you is out of place

35. Here's some new lyrics someone else did...

Paging Symbolman!...

http://lynnrockets.wordpress.com/2009/08/11/fox-on-the-run-2/

FOX ON THE RUN

(sung to the Sweet song “Fox On The Run”)

Why is that network insane
No one there has a brain
So easy to abhor
Each day they add a new pretty face
But they’re losing in the gene pool race
They speak like sidewalk whores

Fox on the run
They scream and everybody starts a-running
Beck, Britt Hume and big Bill O’Reilly
Fox is on the run
F-foxy, Fox is on the run. They’ll fade away.

Koo-Koo, that is the Fox network brand
As “fair and balanced” as DisneyLand
So easy to ignore
News, that is so God damned lame
Should hide their heads in shame
And show their hosts the door

Fox on the run
They scream and everybody starts a-running
Beck, Britt Hume and big Bill O’Reilly
Fox is on the run
F-foxy, Fox is on the run. They’ll fade away.

(musical interlude)

F-foxy, Fox is on the run
They scream and think that we’re having fun
Take a run and hide yourself away
Fox is on the run
F-foxy, Fox is on the run. They’ll fade away.

3. I've said elsewhere that some of the ads in Beck now are PI's.
(Per Inquiry) spots, which are unpaid filler -- unless someone actually calls to buy the product.

They are REALLY hurting.

5. we should keep up the pressure, then
Because Fox News needs to be strangled--put out of its miserable existence. It is responsible for more of the hate speech out there than anyone else, save perhaps Limbaugh.

This is great news. As a former advertising person, I concur with your assessment on how this is affecting them.

Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 01:55 PM by cascadiance
... the other night!

They are bad news... They are running promotions directly from both Limbaugh's and Glen Beck's web servers.

http://candacesalima.blogspot.com/2007/12/carbonite-online-backup-wahoo.html

I have inside information that Carbonite just got added as a Glen Beck web site advertiser after the advertiser boycott started...

Would you want to back up your valuable personal data on their web servers? HELL NO! I wouldn't back it up any one else's servers anyway, but that's my choice!

We should send a note to MSNBC and Rachel Maddow to perhaps reject their ads too, unless they pull away from Beck (and Limbaugh too)...

... to Beck's web site.

They might run a perfectly well run business and do a great job ethically to boot, I don't know. But I don't like how they are trying to use both Beck and Limbaugh to promote their products heavily, and then sneakily put an ad on Rachel Maddow's show.

Would seem that they'd want to stay away from opinionated sites for advertising their product if they want people to trust them with copies of their private data, especially if they view those opinionated sites as opposite of their own. I wonder how the wingnuts might respond if they found out that they were advertising on Rachel's show too.

I have signed over a dozen petitions and sent dozens of emails and faxes over the last 2 years and felt it was a waste. I almost didn't sign the CoC petition and send out faxes with a personal message because I figured it'd be a waste of time. But this one actually worked. Yay.

9. Fox will be there even if every advertiser leaves
It doesn't matter how much money the network loses. Fox would still be there if they had zero advertisers, because it exists for a political purpose - corporate propaganda. As long as Murdoch has cash to spare, he will keep his megaphone running.

Besides, there are plenty of products that depend on an audience of non-critical thinkers and dupes.

40. Here's some new lyrics for that ol' favorite!
Fox on the Run
(new lyrics by D X Stone)

I don't wanna play your game
You've neither brains NOR shame
You're idiots and boors
O.K., you think you got some pretty faces
But it's obvious that you're all racists
You fascist fucking whores

FOX is on the run
They'd scream and everybody'd come a'running
But now it's kinda fun to watch 'em bray
FOX is on the run!
(They're toxic!)
FOX is on the run
Oh happy day!

You, you LIE about just everyone
But the shit you spew is fuckin' dumb
I've heard it all before
We don't wanna advertise
'Cause ALL you say is lies
And we can't take no more!

FOX is on the run
They tide is turning and you're DONE--you're done in!
Take a gun and blow yourselves away
FOX is on the run!
(F-freakin' NAZIS!)
FOX is on the run
Oh happy day!

(Repeat chorus loudly and continually til network fades away completely)

Sounds lovely to me!

AFTER THE FOX

Who is the fox? (I am the fox)
Who are you? (I am Rupert Murdoch!)
Who is me? (Me is a thief)
You'll bring your poor, poor mother grief, so

Chorus:

After the fox, after the fox
Off to the hunt with chains and locks
So, after the fox, after the fox
Someone is always chasing after the fox

Verse 2:

Where is the gold? (It's on the truck)
Where's the truck? (I won't tell)
You must tell (Then I will lie)
You'll make your poor, poor sister cry (ha ha ha...), so

repeat chorus

Verse 3:

Why do you steal? (So I'll be rich)
Why not work? (Work is hard)
You'll be caught (I never fail)
All little crooks wind up in jail (Not me, not me), so

repeat chorus

Ol' Peter Sellers movie... written by Neil Simon;
song composed by Burt Bacharach, performed by Sellers and The Hollies
Movie poster by the inimitable Frank Frazetta!!!

38. You should look for "cume" ratings and not raw ratings as these stats show....

Cume ratings are arguably what advertisers are more interested in to judge the effectiveness of their ads.

Raw ratings just look at the raw numbers for each entity at any time slice.

Cume ratings look at a whole day or day part and look at the number of unique viewers for each channel during that time period. Some of those viewers might have come on only to watch the headlines of the news or a little longer and then gone off to do other things (like perhaps shop for the stuff they might have just seen advertisd). Fox attracts many habitual right wing TV junkies that sit around and watch their crap all day, which inflates their ratings in any one time slot, but doesn't really grow the number of unique viewers over the day. Advertisers don't care as much about appealing to habitual TV junkies that just sit around and watch FoxNews all day. They want to reach as many possible viewers as possible, and especially those that use their time more judiciously and go out and do other things that are more likely to help them out if the ads they saw affected them positively.

Haven't had time myself to really find a more recent article but here's one from a year ago that notes Fox slipping down to not be in first place when meauring stats in this way.

I used to work in TV News myself when I was younger and studied this in college, so these measurements have been important for some time. Fox likes to trumpet the raw ratings as that's where they do best, and the corporate media drones like to push that as well.

But this is why for so many years that CNN could still charge higher ad rates for their news hours than Fox, even with Fox getting more ad "ratings", when CNN would get cume ratings that were so much better. I think that happened especially in the days they used to have the HNN news channel just focus on 15 minute real news segments, and not distort that presentation theme like they have in recent years when they even had Glen Beck on HNN for a while.

37. When the corporate ad money runs out....
... where will FOX's operating money come from?

39. Nope. FOX are just being dicks.
WOOHOO! Fox is not honoring requests by Run-of-Schedule advertisers to pull their ads from Becks show. They must be really hurting to go to this length.

We must keep up the pressure!

I think FOX is running these Binder and Binder ads to be dicks. They're punishing Binder and Binder by putting them in a slot that won't produce gains for the advertiser.

The truth is that Glenn Beck has soared in the ratings and FOX believes they can piss-off some advertisers and still make money with him.

It can't last forever as much as FOX might wish, though.
