Levi Unloads: "Me and Mrs. Palin" (Vanity Fair)
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 09:36 AM by kpete
Levi Unloads

It may not be a tell-all book. But it does look like a tell-all Vanity Fair article with estranged Palin would-be son-in-law Levi Johnston. Among young Levi's claims -- a secret plan to cover up Bristol pregnancy by having Palins adopt the son and Palin's plan to resigning after the 2008 election to "triple the money."

Levi Johnston: "Me and Mrs. Palin"
by Vanity Fair

September 2, 2009, 12:01 AM

For “Me and Mrs. Palin,” Johnston tells Vanity Fair his story about life with the Palin family—with whom he lived for two months after the election—over the course of his two-and-a-half-year relationship with Bristol. He turns a number of commonly held beliefs about the former governor—the purportedly loving mother, devoted wife, and prolific hunter—upside down.

The Palin house was much different from what many people expect of a normal family, even before she was nominated for vice president. There wasn’t much parenting in that house. Sarah doesn’t cook, Todd doesn’t cook—the kids would do it all themselves: cook, clean, do the laundry, and get ready for school. Most of the time Bristol would help her youngest sister with her homework, and I’d barbecue chicken or steak on the grill.

Even before Palin became John McCain’s running mate, she seemed worried about what a grandchild would do to her political career. According to Johnston, she had a plan for how to handle her daughter’s unexpected pregnancy.

Sarah told me she had a great idea: we would keep it a secret—nobody would know that Bristol was pregnant. She told me that once Bristol had the baby she and Todd would adopt him. That way, she said, Bristol and I didn’t have to worry about anything. Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging—she wouldn’t give up. She would say, “So, are you gonna let me adopt him?” We both kept telling her we were definitely not going to let her adopt the baby. I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn’t want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid.

After the campaign, Johnston watched Palin turn into a different person. The result back home in Alaska was a woman ready to turn in elected office for money.

Sarah was sad for a while. She walked around the house pouting. I had assumed she was going to go back to her job as governor, but a week or two after she got back she started talking about how nice it would be to quit and write a book or do a show and make “triple the money.” It was, to her, “not as hard.” She would blatantly say, “I want to just take this money and quit being governor.” She started to say it frequently, but she didn’t know how to do it. When she came home from work, it seemed like she was more and more stressed out.

2. If this kid was a scumbag and had no credibility before the election
I'm not sure how he has any credibility now. This country has serious problems to solve, and we should
focus on those. If Vanity Fair wants to put a stupid kid whose future is in the meth or porn industries,
that's their lookout. Cuts no ice with me.

7. And Palin is more credible how?
Frankly I don't think Levi is smart enough to be all that self serving. If he were, he would go about it in an entirely different way. While that doesn't mean everything he says is the gospel, it doesn't mean it's all bullshit either. On the other hand, I'm quite positive EVERYTHING Palin does is self serving. I'm also pretty sure that she tries to pretend she's the perfect mom when clearly she isn't anywhere near perfect at anything. Sometimes when faced with two conflicting unreliable sources, you have to decide which is the least unreliable and whose story best fits the given set of circumstances.

So while I'm about 50% sure Levi is a lying piece of shit, I'm about 99.99% sure Palin is a lying piece of shit.

You started with the binary logic. I don't think ANY of the Wasilla Hillbillies have any credibility whatsoever, and I'm not interested in learning about the workings of the Palin household from some punk kid we were ripping to shreds just a few minths ago.

That's pretty much it.

When you get a chance, can you let me know what's going on with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears? I stopped paying attention to media-hosted gossip when the economy fell apart in 2007.

If your idea of "binary logic" is using analytical thought processes to evaluate a given circumstance, then obviously you have a different definition of the term than I do.

On the other hand, ad hominem kinda goes hand in hand with a black and white doctrine.

36. Yep, DUers were slamming the guy as a redneck hick during the campaign
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 11:45 AM by Mike Daniels
As soon as the White House gravy train came to an abrupt stop Levi decided money and fame would come from jumping ship and slamming Palin.

Posters on DU then did a 180 and started hailing the opportunist as a hero ignoring that up until recently that Levi said several times that he'd vote for Palin if she ran again.

The two grifters (Levi and Sarah) deserve each other and personally I wouldn't be surprised if this "feud" is some big scam that everyone on both sides generated to keep the publicity on full throttle.

There is nothing admirable about Levi Johnson (besides the fact that he's a great looking guy who keeps himself in great shape). That doesn't mean it's not terrific fun to watch him trash Mama Palin and her brood of Wind-up Photo Ops of Hypocrisy.

There's a big difference in taking perverse joy out of watching a house pet turn on its abusive, beehive-haired mistress and measuring someone's head for inclusion on Mt. Rushmore.

53. I never thought of him as a scumbag
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 11:16 AM by TlalocW
He's no intellectual. In fact, I would say he's dumber than a sack of hammers, and even though, he got himself into that mess by boinking the governor's kid, I felt kind of sorry for him because he probably was trapped in a way during the campaign. There wasn't going to be anyway they were going to let him go since it was bad enough Peppercorn or Cornstarch (or whatever her name is) was pregnant, but she sure as hell wasn't going to be a single, unwed mom. Bill Maher, I think, even offered him sanctuary if he could escape. :)

That said, he's probably going to milk his 15 minutes for all it's worth, but from what I've seen the guy has less charisma than the worst stereotype SNL ever did of Al Gore. I think he would be happiest if none of this ever happened, and he was allowed to go back to being an anonymous snow-mobiling, moose-hunting redneck.

But scumbag or just plain stupid, what he has to say about the Palins may have some merit.

112. Sorry
but I follow AK politics pretty closely, and Levi has not been proven a liar yet, whereas Sarah has.

Levi has been slow to criticize Sarah, wanting to be able to spend time with his kid. Levi has a full time body guard now. Levi's mom was just found guilty of dealing controlled substances and will be sentenced soon; she may end up in the prison rife with allegations of abuse by none other than a loyal Palin appointee (and ex-boyfriend).

Levi is no hero to the left. He still likes Sarah and says he would vote for her. On the other hand, he hasn't tried to do much other than see if he can make some money off of the crap that he went through. What's wrong with that? He has volunteered as a coach for special needs kids. He seems like a decent kid who comes from a messed up background and probably isn't super bright, but has a good heart.

He sees his kid as often as he's allowed. Character wise, I'd place my money on Levi. He is in no way comparable to Palin in terms of being a known liar or a grifter. That's patently unfair and untrue.

49. Sure he's a high school dropout...
...and no doubt he has an axe to grind.

On the other hand, he's an individual who was situated in the eye of the storm, so to speak, during the last presidential election. He has intimate knowledge of the Palins that we do not have.

Of course anything he says must be processed through a filter: one has to understand it's his slant on things, and it's undoubtedly self-serving (although let me be clear: I do not for a moment think that he is more self-serving than anyone else who might be in such a position; certainly we have seen numerous "insider" and "tell-all" books by people who held high government office, and in most cases they are self-serving as well).

Bottom line for me: if it helps to expose Sarah Palin for the grifter that she is, then it's a public service and I'm all for it.

103. +1!!
What he says about her is credible in that it fits with actions that have been corroborated by other sources who got close enough to her to get burned ... such as early political mentors and supporters, people who were victims of her vindictiveness (viz. Troopergate and Walt Monaghan), her inability to mention any single thing that she reads, her general shallowness, her deliberate baiting of RW crowds on the campaign trail, her truly strange behavior regarding Trig's birth, the fact that in nearly all situations where the family was posed together, it was Bristol who demonstrated more maternal caring towards Trig than Sarah ever did (I'm presuming that Trig is Sarah's), and that Sarah suddenly and without any credible explanation just up and quits her job. Those are just a few of the things that tend to make what he says more probable than not.
Do he and these other individuals have their own slants and biases on what they reported? No doubt. That's the way we all are; we process things in the way that we see them and generally with some degree of self-servingness, voluntarily or involuntarily.
It's because of Levi's unique perspective that he is even being asked about his experience. And it's because this impressively un- and underqualified woman was foisted on us by a self-serving candidate with abysmally poor judgment that we are even interested.
What a bullet we dodged! Thank God!

She used those kids for photo op props and apparently ignored them the rest of the time.
Unfortunately for her kids, mommy does believe you can put a price on happiness and
her kids were her ticket to cashing in the big bucks.

5. More - kids fended for themselves, divorced was discussed

Sarah Palin’s Imagery Management Is About To Get Harder

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s imagery problems are about to get even harder. She is about to the pitchforked into the national headlines again due to an up and coming article in Vanity Fair that will contain an interview with Levi Johnston where he’ll give his version of what it was like to see Palin behind the scenes at home.

His version isn’t pretty: he paints a portrait of a Palin who thinks she was the one running for President, who felt the Governor’s job was too hard, who wanted to leave the Gov seat to write a book and make big bucks — all within a household where the kids allegedly fended for themselves to cook their own meals, a household where the word “divorce” surfaced frequently.

I'd say that if Palin doesn't fire back at Levi full force with a lawsuit from Van Flea, then it is probably either because a) what he says in VF is true, and/or b) she knows that if she hassles him too much in his pursuit of gold coin by releasing these amusing tiny stories, he will let loose with who fathered her last kid, and demand the dna to prove it.

Popcorn, need to get lots of popcorn for this.....

I don't really care if he's credible or not, although I tend to believe him. She's shown herself capable of putting up facades in the past. Like the one about Levi and her daughter getting married and how much in love they were. Dressing him up in a suit and parading him around on stage. That after his facebook demonstrated he was not in love with Bristol and had no intentions of marrying her.

If he now turns around and bites her, I don't really care because she deserves it. I just want her exposed for the narcissistic lowlife that she is so that she never gets anywhere near to any national office.

Anyone who doesn't see Palin quit FOR THE MONEY is a fool.

I suspect Palin is a good cook, but doesn't bother most of the time due to inconvenience and lack of time with a full-time career.

Same thing with her parenting. She really doesn't strike me as the motherly type, just the baby-loving type. I feel sorry for Trig.

32. Nothing said is a surprise re Palin, imo...
Leaving aside her 'not cooking', all the rest was on display during the campaign. Her casual disregard for her children unless it was photo-op time, her narcissism, etc. We all knew she abdicated her responsibility by quitting in the middle of her term of office because she saw a possible opportunity to make money and continue her self-promotion.

In reading this, it is, imo, simply affirmation that the impressions most DUers had of Palin were right on point.

70. Not sure what the essential difference is between Levi and Joe the Plumber
Both willingly got involved with the McCain/Palin campaign(*) and both have continued to milk their "celebrity" well beyond the 15 minute mark by whoring themselves out to whoever will agree to give them money and face time.

Nobody but the birthers takes Joe's opinion on political issues seriously and it's hard to accept that Levi is impartially reporting on life in the Palin abode.

(*) I don't buy that Levi feared the wrath of a first-term no-name governor that practically nobody outside of Alaska had ever heard of prior to her selction to VP candidate. Seriously, how hard would it have been for Levi to just pack a bag and disappear to go hunting a day or so before the convention?

He did seem a bit befuddled, being handled the way he was...
and I got a kick out of that bit at the end; "You wanna do a shoot for Playgirl? Think you got the equipment to do so?"
Then the way the guy backpedaled when Levi acquiesced, but said "If I do this, you're with me- you're my right-hand man."

Guess Playgirl won't be featuring Levi after all...

For the sake of his kid he should just shut the fuck up. He doesn't have anything of substance to say and all he is doing is breeding animosity between himself and the mother's family.

I don't care how much Mr. Johnston yaps... birds of a feather flock together. Anything negative that can be said about him can be said 10-fold about the Palin clan. I think the general public needs to be reminded of just how close they came to putting these people a 72 year old's heartbeat away from the Presidency. As for the adoption story, I believe every word of it. If she got away with it once, why wouldn't she do it again?
