Honolulu Seeks to Ban Bad Smells on Buses

HONOLULU (AP) -- Stinky city bus riders soon could get soaked.

The Honolulu City Council is considering a bill that would impose up to a $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail for public transit passengers convicted of being too smelly.

The bill will be heard Thursday in committee. It would make it illegal to have "odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system."

It doesn't matter if it's body odor or offensive fumes that emanates from clothes, personal belongings or animals.

Councilmen Rod Tam and Nestor Garcia co-sponsored the anti-odor bill.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii said it is concerned with laws that are inherently vague, which opens the door to discriminatory enforcement based on an officer's individual prejudices.

2. Easy enough
Put them in jail, population goes up, taxes go up and more cops/jailers are hired, and we end up paying the ticket for them in a round about way :)

6. Looks like I got out of there in the nick of time!
:P

Note: Rod Tam is a former legislator, who distinguished* himself primarily by sponsoring a bill that would have allowed for paid nap time for state employees! Seriesly.

8. As a daily bus rider...
I have to say this is bullshit.

For people whose only means of transportation is the bus, this is criminal.

I have smelled some truly epically ripe people on the bus, to the point of almost vomiting, but I have also understood, that regardless of how these folks smell, this is their own means of getting around town.

I take out my lip balm and smear a little across my top lip. Problem solved.

11. Chicken shit works too and also for chapped lips. You won't notice the other odors and you won't
lick your lips.
:D

10. I wish my state would do that for folks who go to the movie theater.
I always get stuck next to somebody who seems to have eaten garlic cloves for dinner right before going to the movie.

17. Sure sounds like it
They know the homeless folks can't pay a $500 fine so it's just an excuse to round them up and incarcerate them so they won't upset the precious tourists. It also keeps the homeless "ghetto-ized" because this proposed law would take away one of their only means of travel.

18. how about applying the law to 'artificial' odors
i mean i get hammered at least five times a day by members of either gender by the flood of odor that comes from their ritual bathing in cologne or perfume...it is unreal. i am about to get on a 5+ hour flight and i pray to GOD that the lady that just walked by is not upwind...
