SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Police took action Wednesday morning to close down a Sacramento homeless camp.

Officers issued several citations for alleged unlawful camping to those living at the SafeGround encampment, located on a vacant lot on C Street between 12th and 13th streets.

The property owner, attorney Mark Merin, gave permission to the campers to live on his property.

Police allowed the 30 or so occupants of the camp to take away many of their personal belongings.

However, officers confiscated some tents and sleeping bags.

Police said officers visited the camp in recent days advising camp occupants to leave.

3. I wish the article was more specific.
I will see what else I can find. I can not think of any good reason to take someone's shelter and bedding.

"The individuals out here have been contacted multiple times in the past two weeks and they have been informed they are in violation of the Sacramento city camping ordinance," said Sacramento police spokeswoman Laura Peck. "We are out here citing those folks."

Peck said police are hopeful the homeless will gather their belongings and leave. Police are offering containers to the homeless to help gather up belongings.

About a dozen homeless people were on the site when police arrive, but police counted 33 tents on the lot.

2. Did the police have permission to enter private property?
Too bad someone couldn't pour cement in the police chief's home.

4. Wondering if there were complaints of violations of zoning used to do this
Sad, but zoning regs might be used to basically make homelessness illegal. Of course, it doesn't solve the problem of homelessness, does it? Just keeps it out of view.
