Neighbors Angry at Man Claiming He's a Sex Offender
Nearby Landlord Say It's Making Renting Property Impossible

By John Gadson

July 30, 2009

JEFFERSON COUNTY, MISSOURI ( KPLR )

A landlord and one of his neighbors in Jefferson County are squaring off over a sign the neighbor has put in his window. The sign in the house next door reads "Registered Offender, JCSO," with the initials presumably referring to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

The landlord says the sign is keeping families with children from renting his home, and, on top of that, he says it's misleading. There is no record of the man next door actually being on the sex offender list, or even having much of a criminal record.

The neighbor refused to comment on why he has the sign in his window.

3. BRILLIANT way to keep families from moving in next door.
I'd guess that the guy likes his neighborhood quiet.

Reminds me of the guy who lived down the street from me when I was a kid. He had a sign on his front gate that read "Solicitors will be shot. Children will be fed to the dogs." He'd come out screaming if someone so much as touched his fence.

5. Perhaps a form of civil disobedience like the Danes in WWII?
The story goes that when the Nazis insisted that Jews wear yellow stars, everyone started wearing them, Jew or not, thus rendering the identification impossible to use.

Maybe this guy, for whatever reason, hates the idea of a sex offender registry, and puts the sign there as a way to protest?
