Teen tackles armed girl on Miss. school bus
Source: USA TODAY

By Chris Joyner, USA TODAY
Yazoo County Sheriff Tommy Vaughan knew how it ended, but he said there still was plenty of drama in watching the Mississippi school bus security tape.

At 6:53 a.m. Tuesday, a 14-year-old girl boarded the bus and walked better than halfway toward the back. She reached into a flower-print bag and pulled out a chrome-plated .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun and began shouting and threatening the other students.

"She was using some hard words," Vaughan said. "She was saying somebody on the bus was either messing with her or picking on her."

Then, Yazoo County High School football player Kaleb Eulls approached the girl, Vaughan said.

"He kept telling her, 'Put the gun down; put the gun down.' "

Then Eulls, 18, did what made him highly recruited as a defensive end — he tackled her. Vaughan said the students both went down, and a second later, Eulls' right hand shot back into view holding the weapon.

He did the right thing, but it was still incredibly dangerous for him to do it. I'm not going to second guess whether that was the best moment, or if she could have been talked down. We can only trust his judgement. In this case, it turned out well for everyone.

Yes, it sure was dangerous for him... he must have decided it was worth risking his life to save others'. Maybe it wasn't a line between bravery and stupidity but between bravery and doing nothing. He's awesome.

2. Shape of things to come
After all those yahoos toting their guns into town hall meetings, we are going to see more of this.

Can't wait for some "guns at the OK Corral" and, with a bit of luck, only the gun totters will end up dead, not any by standers.

43. It's called extrapolation. Or taking it to the logical conclusion.
No one suggested children, per se (hell, I'm sure many dense gun nuts have, but I won't bother searching), but surely you won't deny that any time a gun nut goes crazy on numerous people, it's always suggested that the tragedy could have been avoided if more people owned firearms. So taking this train of thought to its logical conclusion says that if children were armed, they'd have been able to deal with this other armed child. If you're too dense to understand that was said tongue in cheek, don't blame me.

Crimes are routinely stopped by adults with firearms who are carrying them legally. Nice try though.

The common bond for all mass shootings is guns, so what exactly is your point? Nice try though. It appears that once again you have no idea what tongue in cheek means and you have no idea as to why the original comment you responded to was apt and why your response was idiotic.

Fewer people are murdered by CCW permit holders than by LEO's. The overwhelming majority of people murdered with firearms are killed by people illegally possessing firearms. I know it's shocking for you that murderers would disregard other laws but they do.

Not that I'd expect you to understand that after the other inane comments you've made in this thread. The common bond for all your previous comments is that you simply don't understand anything that's not spelled out explicitly for you.

I, as well as others in this thread have explained the comment to you and why your reply was so incredibly stupid and unfunny. The fact that you keep responding with the same inapplicable responses shows that you have no desire to have a legitimate debate, but rather to spout out tired NRA talking points. Anyone reading your posts knows you're pretty good at framing the issue, and here is another example.

Your real defensiveness comes not from the outrage at the idea of arming children, but satirically chiding a philosophy you believe in.

70. Thanks for the compliment.
My philosophy is that law abiding people possessing firearms doesn't increase the crime rate. In regards to children and firearms, it's an individual decision for parents to make within the bound of the law. I don't believe that anyone who doesn't want to should possess a firearm. I don't believe that anyone convicted of a violent crime should be allowed to possess a firearm. You say it was satirical chiding when in fact people here actually believe that people on DU who defend the RKBA believe that EVERYONE should be armed. I hope that clears it all up for you.

Unfortunately that joke perpetuated a common myth, pointing out that no one actually feels that way was an attempt to correct that myth. Granted many people here bury their heads in the sand at the mere mention of firearms so it probably did little good. Kind of like the racist joke that reinforces stereotypes, the ones laughing probably won't get the point but that doesn't mean you shouldn't call them on it.

He's just so dense that he saw it and still has no idea what it means. Everyone in this thread is able to comprehend why it was apt, but because he doesn't notice anyone explicitly calling for the arming of children, he thinks it deserves to be mocked. Trying to explain to him what a logical conclusion is is like trying to explain Kant to a puppy.

25. Well...if the school system would actually crack down on bullying then this wouldn't happen.
Kids don't just bring guns to school for kicks. They bring them for a reason...most often because of a sense of powerlessness over persistent and psychologically traumatic bullying.

Want to stop the vast majority of these cases? Kick bullies out of school, zero tolerance regardless of income, social stature, or athletic value.
