Republicans upset over Obama speaking to school children |
|
I really don't know the entire details because the first time I heard about it was in the context of republicans upset about the idea. As I understand it Obama will encouraging children to value their education, set goals and pursue them, etc. I don't think he'll be going over heath care reform or pushing any hot button issues so I don't understand it. I caught a little bit of Fox flipping channels just to watch the debate between Crowley, Ingraham, and Colmes. Colmes is the one that mentioned the facts I listed above on what Obama will be discussing. Laura and Monica's argument was he is trying to get them while they're young or he is going to sneak in some politics about the environment and green jobs.
As I understand it most of these people voted for McCain right? Well when I was freshman attending Sinagua High School in Flagstaff, AZ while I was living there briefly for 6 months. McCain went there and a high school in Sedona, AZ to ONLY speak to Seniors about the impact of 9/11 what the US will probably do about it and what he's going to do about it. It was many years ago as I don't remember exactly what was said and I no one below the Senior Class was able to attend but I caught bits on the local news afterwards and that is the jist of this.
The reason why I bring that up because in hindsight I believe by only speaking to Seniors he was trying to capture future voters when he could have easily spoken to all of us. I mean 9/11 affected us all right? And of course what Obama is doing isn't unique that those very people complaining about what Obama is doing McCain did the very same thing.
Probably nothing really to gain from this post but this objection over what Obama is doing prompted me to share a story.

1. personally i would like to see the transcript so we can decide if we want our kids to see it |
|
im sure there will be nothing controversial in it, but we should have the right as parents to decide that..

Did you ever ask for Bushs' speeches when he spoke in schools? Or Clintons, or Reagans?

10. nope didnt have kids in school then, as ive said parents should be allowed to decide |
|
what might not be controversial or offensive or political to you, may be to others, let parents read what will be said and then let individual parents decide or do you think that parents dont have the right to make a decision like this..

|
Do you have a problem with that???? I remember when I was a little kid, the President Kennedy addressed school children on one occasion. No one thought that indoctrination was taking place!

going to be said if they want, then they can decide whether they want their kids to see or hear, cant see the problem with parents being given the info and letting them decide,

37. My problem with this viewpoint is this: |
|
Do you ask for, or are you privy to, EVERY single lesson your children are presented with in school, before it comes home in the form of homework?
Do you know what every teacher is going to talk about, or what speakers are coming to the school for assemblies and exactly what is going to be said ahead of time?
I am truly puzzled by this response.
In a perfect world, we could certainly gauge what our children are exposed to, but when they're sent to a public school, there are curricula that may or may not fit one's "values."
Being made to read Ann Coulter's book, for example, is a requirement my daughter has already had in AP English. And the teacher is a FAN of Coulter.
I didn't pitch a fit.
For a generic motivational speech by POTUS to fall into the same category of "what my children are exposed to" is.....frightening.
And, yes, I'd be pitching a fit if this were happening under Bush.
We've lost our minds...not just right-wingers. Or maybe they are WHY the rest of us are losing our minds.

43. How far does that go? Does a parent have the right to say "I don't want my kid reading this book" |
|
or "I don't want my kid learning about evolution"?

After all they may say something that you don't agree with. I think if it's that important take your precious vulnerable kiddys out of public education and teach them yourself at home.

40. actually my wife is pretty het up on what the kids are learning, |
|
my issue is with politicians regardless of party talking directly to my kids without first telling parents what they are going to talk about. I am sure there will be nothing controversial but we still should get to decide if our kids get to see it. Cant understand what the problwm with giving parents info and letting them decide is...

I want them to grow up to be themselves - not little mirrors.

If I disagreed with what they were saying, or even if I agreed, I would talk about it after class with my mom.
How far does "parents get to decide" go? Do you require seeing the lesson plans in advance?

|
It's that simple.
To them, by definition, he's evil. So anything he would do is evil, and must be opposed. Including telling a bunch of kids to work hard and stay in school.
Fuck them.

12. This morning I went over to my elderly mom's house to do a few chores for her. |
|
The first thing after I walked in her door she was telling me all about how Obama was planning to "secretly beam propaganda directly into every classroom in the country." She was very upset about it.
Does anyone care to tell me how the Democrats have managed to so completely lose control of the national dialog?

I'm sure my subject line got several of these responses. I don't post many OPs in GD because I'm quite intimidated of many of you. I know republicans complain about everything Obama is doing. I was venting about something specific that was on my mind and couldn't think of a better place to share it then DU. I'll try to be even more careful next time I think about starting another OP. Again I apologize.

I think DUers are just taking the opportunity to state that the repubs are always upset with Obama over anything and everything rather than taking offense with your OP. The story related to your subject line certainly is being talked about so your OP was timely.
I sure don't think an apology is needed at all.

I realize now that I am overreacting to the few posts stating this fact.
