Turley on Maddow discussing replacements for Stevens
A real liberal to replace him? A Sotomayor moderate? What of the cascading affect of a replacement less liberal than Stevens on cases not unlike some of the closer recent 5/4 decisions?

1. It's funny how many people are calling Sotomayor a "moderate"

Some people....

...off the deep end

3. It seems a reasonably accurate term
It isn't derisive. I think Liberal would be farther off the mark

5. If you lined up the justices left to right by political leanings... she'd be third from the left
Only Ginsberg and Stevens to her left... Breyer JUST to her right.

17. It's funny how you are not, Daemon.
I have heard her described as moderate by more than Turley. What makes you think she's not moderate? She sailed through confirmation hearings. The little Senator Graham/Sessions WWF theatrics was just for show. Give it a break. Are you Rahm or does he simply dispatch you here as a neocon activist?

18. There are only two kinds of people
who don't think that Justice Sotomayor is , AT BEST, a moderate- People who haven't read her opinions and just assume that the latina woman must be a liberal, and people that are so far right themselves that they call Bill Clinton, for example, a "liberal". Which you happen to be, I have no idea.

20. Why would Bush 41 appoint a dyed-in-the-wool liberal to the U.S. District Court in 1991?

22. If you consider Justice Souter to be a "dyed in the wool liberal"
you are obviously a very conservative Democrat, assuming even that you are a Democrat.

2. Sotomayor is a Latina
Latinas aren't too down w/ abortion I've found, in my own experience just saying. I don't know why everyone thinks Sotomayor is going to be the next RBG.

7. Yep... that phrase is used to excuse all sorts of bigotry...

"in my own experience... blacks are lazy and undisciplined"

"in my own experience... italians are hotheaded and involved in organized crime"

"in my own experience... jewish people are miserly"

You don't get away with slandering Sotomayor... who is outside your "own experience"... just because you want to perpetuate a stereotype about people who share her ancestry.

"in my own experience" and "just saying" are ways to try to slide your bigotry past others.

Sorry... not buying it.

You're profiling.

11. You've had your life experience, I've had mine
Yours is obviously different. Not a right or wrong issue. But wrap yourself tight in politically correct smugness if you must. :toast:

...that has no bearing on whether Sonia Sotomayor is pro-life.

None.

Nada.

16. "In my experience"....the reason isn't because of ethnicity but of religious doctrine
Catholicism is a predominant religion of Hispanics.

9. The next nom has got to be a big liberal, period. But I understand
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 11:17 PM by babylonsister
why Sotomayor was selected. She's good. Now we need better. If Stevens is throwing in the towel, it's because he knows we need to replace him now with a strong liberal. Plus he's old.

I'm in awe at the things this president has to do, and the criticism he'll get if he doesn't do it right (or even if he does), from all people.

Why do people even run?

13. Considering all the grief
Obama got over Sotomayor he might as well go for it and appoint the most flaming liberal out there. Why the hell not? He's gonna get crap no matter what he does so why not give the RWers something to really get their knickers in a twist over. It would be fun to watch them throw hissy fits.

maybe someone from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals - the RWers hate that san Francisco treat.
