Note to the large Democratic majorities in both houses of congress |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:19 AM by smoogatz
I've donated to and volunteered for Democratic candidates in every election since 1992. My wife and I came close to maxing out on individual contributions to Obama last year, and we both spent hours we couldn't really spare working for his election. But--and this is actually hard for me to say--if the Democrats in congress pass healthcare "reform" that includes mandated health insurance without a real and robust public option, and if Obama's craven enough to sign said piece of shit, I'm done. I will from that point forward support only REAL progressives who are committed to advancing an actual progressive agenda, not to serving the interests of corporate donors. If that means the freaking Green party, so be it. And no, a public option that "triggers" in two years won't do it for me, either. If the Democrats can't get this right given their current majorities in congress and the tremendous public support shown in poll after poll for the public option, they suck. And they suck in a way that's particularly despicable and disingenuous--at least the Republicans are up-front about which constituency they serve. I'm tired of supporting politicians that suck. I'm tired of Democrats who piss up my leg and tell me it's raining. Please stop sucking. Stop insulting my intelligence and get to work, or you lose me.
Not kidding,

1. All three bodies controlled by the Democrats are to blame. Their freaking powder is so dry that it |

has petrified and is now unusable. For myself, they have already lost me. They can get me back IF they produce something of value. I am not optimistic that will happen.

as they do need to know, and they probably won't see it here.

5. What if "get to work" means the opposite of what people are conditioned to think it really means? |

Initially, I thought this was a brainy strategy on the part of the Obama team to essentially call out proponents of reform and esp. the public option. I thought their plan was be appearing to cave it would (as it has) bring out the strong progressives to make as much noise and objection to compromise, as those on the right had been making. Now, I no longer think this.
I believe Obama MUST stake his presidency on this. Frankly, I can't wrap my mind around all the "political" implications of the various chess moves. But, at some point, it becomes unforeseeable. All I know is, at some point, leaders must walk the walk, put it all out there, take the stand, let the chips fall where they may. This is the kind of moral leadership we elected Obama for, I am counting on him for, and I believe America is ready for. He should have the courage of his convictions, at this juncture. Right now, I'm pretty disappointed. Maybe I'm just too unsophisticated to "get it."
