Angry Florida parent: "I will not tolerate my children being brainwashed by this man. (Obama)"
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:57 AM by sabra

http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/educationblog/2009/09/some_broward_parents_object_to_1.html

<snip>

Some Broward parents are upset about President Obama’s planned speech to students Tuesday.

The speech, which will be nationally televised at noon on C-SPAN and broadcast through the White House Web site, will focus on “persisting and succeeding in school” and that Obama will “challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.

But some parents who disagree with Obama’s politics say they don’t want their children involved. They’ve asked for an alternative activity at this time, or have threatened to keep their children home from school.

Said one parent in an e-mail to School Board member Stephanie Kraft: “I will not tolerate my children being brainwashed by this man.”

Another parent wrote: “I believe as a parent that I am the one who should teach my child about personal responsibility and life goals. I do not agree with any of President Obama’s views and policies so I would appreciate if my child did not participate.”

Obama’s speech will not mark the first time a U.S. president has directly addressed the nation’s students. President George H.W. Bush also gave a 15-minute speech to students in 1989, focusing on the evils of drug use.

exercising their "parental rights." :sarcasm:

Evidently, some people's concept of "parental rights" include using their children as virtual protest signs, and keeping them ignorant. Ignorant parents beget ignorant children, and the Red States are proof positive of that principal.

2. Dear Scared Parent
If your child can be "brainwashed" by a 15-minute video speech, you're doing a lousy job of parenting. Please consider giving your children up for adoption as you are failing in your primary job in life.

Sincerely,
gratuitous

Don't paint us with that broad brush. This is the bluest county in the state - Democrats far outnumber Republicans and "others" combined. Yes, we have assholes and bigots - I happen to live in a little red pocket where I saw more than a few "W" bumper stickers. But this is not the backwards racist area you imply it is.

116. You got it
Somewhere on DU there is a 'Young Turks' video where they talk about how the Repugs think. They don't gather facts and use logic to reach a conclusion they decide what they want the conclusion to be and then make up what ever it takes to fit that conclusion and ignore any fact that might indicate the conclusion is wrong (they call it motivated reasoning). So in this case what you have is 'Obama is bad and evil' therefore to make this conclusion correct anything that Obama does or says must be 'bad and evil'. Simple isn't it, or at least simple minded.

44. And yet fair minded people continue to be amazed!
I, for one, am astonished that anyone would be surprised by the nationwide movement to keep kids at home during Obama's speech. This hullabaloo IS NOT SPONTANEOUS! The fact is that this is simply the latest skirmish instigated by the gargantuan right wing hate machine. Every right-winger on Clear Channel Radio, Fox News and elsewhere have been bombarding their listeners the last few days about Obama's speech to schoolchildren.

Until Democrats/Progressives in Congress address media consolidation and ownership, things will continue on and the corporatist right wing will lie with impunity to millions of Americans daily. Even in Indianapolis these last few days, each and every right-winger on the radio is preaching from the same prayer book in regard to raising hell about Obama's speech.

It's the media folks!

"An Examination of Obama’s Use of Hidden Hypnosis Techniques in His Speeches
Rick Ross Cult Information Forum (posted link from Las Vegas Penny Press) ^ | Oct. 2008 | ?
Posted on October 18, 2008 6:27:06 PM EDT by MonicaG

Barack Obama’s speeches contain the hypnosis techniques of Dr. Milton Erickson, M.D. who developed a form of “conversational” hypnosis that could be hidden in seemingly normal speech and used on patients without their knowledge for therapy purposes. Obama’s speeches intentionally contain:

Obama’s techniques are the height of deception and psychological manipulation, remaining hidden because one must understand the science behind the language patterns in order to spot them. This document examines Obama’s speeches word by word, hand gesture by hand gesture, tone, pauses, body language, and proves his use of covert hypnosis intended only for licensed therapists on consenting patients. Obama’s mesmerized, cult-like, grade-school-crush-like worship by millions is not because “Obama is the greatest leader of a generation” who simply hasn’t accomplished anything, who magically “inspires” by giving speeches. Obama is committing perhaps the biggest fraud and deception in American history."

I have a certificate in hypnosis-took training years ago. Hypnosis requires the willingness of the subject to accept and the subconscious will trigger a response if you are asked to do something against your conscience. So, if you are told to hurt someone, and your conscience won't allow it, you won't do the act. He's full of BS.

On the other hand, having a shocking or cataclysmic event happen, thus causing fear, like 9/11, using repetition (like the media did for attacking Iraq), and gravitating toward an authoritarian bully figure, like *, causes rational thought to fly out the window and the subconscious mind will accept any absurdity.

And, that's why we have the "teabaggers." Some of them have been "conditioned" by fear and an unwillingness to accept O as president. We should be protesting the networks if you want change in this country. Because some of these networks who hire the basest knuckledraggers are fueling the fear and ignorance. They are very much complicit in how this country is taking shape.

68. I have to admit, if I were ever given a choice
... between letting my child watch a speech by George W. Bush and letting them go to the library to spend those 15 minutes more wisely, I'd have picked the library.

I wouldn't have gotten my panties in a wad about it, though. If the choice hadn't been offered I wouldn't have suffered any mental anguish from the brief exposure of my child to the words of the President of the United States. (I did buy a little electronic encyclopedia that described Bush as "Leader of the war on terror." :puke: That was back around 2002, though.) I assume these parents weren't offered a choice and I think they're getting kind of worked up over something that is not a big deal.

76. Birthers of a nation...
Those advocating for a “boycott” of the speech are probably - no, firmly in the birther camp, “he’s not really our President, so my kid’s not really missing nothing.”

Fortunately, I am old enough to remember things like civics and government classes in high school. I remember when listening to a Presidential speech was something we did as a way to lean and discuss what was said. There was discussion, questions, reading assignments and basic information about all three branches of our government.

Fear is the main diet of those opposed to this administration. Fear is the diet we were fed for 8 long years, oh and secrecy, don't ask because we won't tell, anything, period. It's time to climb out of those make-shift bunkers and back into the light, despite what those fear-mongers are screaming.

Let them stay at home, let them remain un-informed, under-educated and powerless. When they wonder how we cleaned the air, cured the sick and recovered the economy, well they'll never understand what it means to help everyone, even those that would never ask for it. That's ok, there will be a fake reality show network to keep them entertained and glued to their couches. Oh, and faux news will go by the way-side when American public airwaves will require those using them, even corporations, to be American, B-bye Rupert, back to Australia with you. Also, if you want to call yourself a journalist or a news organization, there will be standards to be met, you know like doctors, lawyers and pilots because they also interact with the public and have to have (gasp) licenses!

It is time to abort these Birthers and I ask, where IS the 70+ per cent that support this administration? Oh, I forgot, when they show up, they turn the cameras off... Media Diversity Now, it is time to take back what was always ours, the airwaves are publicly owned, always have and it is time to re-claim them in the name of Thomas Paine, Paul Revere, George Washington and each one of us.

95. I'm all for having parental involvement in schools, but...
... giving them "a say" over whether their child can watch a speech by the elected leader of our country during school hours? Why the hell is this even a question. Call it "social studies." Sheesh... The school should just say, "Presidential speech at the school assembly" and be done with it.

How do you explain to little Bradley why little Susie isn't watching the speech, too? "Well, Bradely, Susie's parents think he wasn't REALLY elected, and they think he's a socialist-communist-fascist Muslim who wants to kill your Grandma because it will make him powerful." The reasons don't even make sense on a first-grade level, much less an adult level.

So.... Seriously - we want to teach our kids that if you didn't vote for someone it's okay to ignore them and act like they're not important, even when that person is leader of the free world?

Stupid proxy wars with children. Morans.

I may have disagreed with a lot of Bush's policies and behaviors, but if he was giving a speech to school kids (oh, wait -- he did!), I'd have no problem with that. The President is the President. When he/she speaks, it's news. His/her prerogative. Period.

So, Obama-haters, if you think Obama is a monster who's going to send mind-vibes through the TV set or computer screen to your kids... well, remember the best education is experiential. So let them watch the speech and see what a monster looks like so they'll know for future reference. Kids are pretty tough, and have good bullshit detectors. I think they can survive the experience. What's the worst that could happen -- that they'd see you were all freaked out over nothing?

I thought freedom was about reviewing all information available, and through critical thinking coming to a conclusion.

Evidently, the conservatives think their kids are too stupid to make up their own minds. More likely, if the kids have access to information other than the filtered, spoon fed, right wing tripe they get at home, the kids may decide for themselves that they are Liberal.

These extreme right-wingers appear to be opposed to America itself. (I heard a Texas secessionist say, or rather bellow, "I hate America! I hate its flag!") My fear is of a group of armed, ignorant, angry right-wing lunatics whipped up by the likes of Glenn Beck into a paroxysm of anti-American hate and fear.

"War on Terror"? Who needs it? How about a "War on Right-Wing Extremism"? We're losing that war right now, because we aren't really fighting it. (Who gets all the media time?)

you faced arrest. Then there was the Dixie Chicks episode -- during one of their shows in the UK (FOREIGN SOIL!!!!) back in 2003, lead singer Natalie Maines said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas."

A major shit-storm ensued -- right-wingers were outraged that their "Christian" president has been maligned on foreign soil. They burned DCs CDs, ranted here and there, and made many Clear Channel radio stations drop the DC's songs.

The group received death threats and suffered the mock outrage offered up by the hypocrites.

Now, these same right-wing people are calling their president "socialist," "Marxist," a Nazi and the anti-Christ. Where did their worship for the office of the president go?

"Or that nice Dick Cheney man. You know, he used to be Vice President. And he says to defend our country it's all right to torture terraists. Or people suspected of terraism. Or people mistakenly identified as someone who might have given a terraist a ride."

109. Just to be on the safe side, parents like this should probably lock their
kids up in the attic and never let them out until they're 30 years old.

Who knows what crazy ideas they could pick up in the public schools?

114. Link to Bush library copy of drug use speech
I find it very funny that he spoke on this but he did... Also if anyone says Bush never asked kids to do anything, look in the 5th paragraph from the bottom.."But even more important, I'm asking you to think about what you can do to make a difference for someone else." Sounds a lot like the "I pledge" video the reps are fired up about

125. the recent past
These are the same people who cheered so loudly when G Bush said he would bring honor back to the White House and then acted ignorant for the next 8 years. "Is your children learning?" If you said he was stupid, you received a tongue lashing from the right about honoring the office of the president. These people lost and if President Obama appeared at the right hand of God, they would become atheists. This all race, ideology, fear, money, ignorance. It's just a shame we still have to look like idiots to the rest of the world.

131. Isn't it interesting...
For progressives and liberals during the Bush years our solution to concerns about propaganda from the right wing was just to interract with our children and participate in the education process. This despite a decades long campaign by theocrats to stupify our schools.

But when these self-same conservative lunatics run into anything that disagrees what do they do? Scream, howl, and shout. Then they try to overthrow school boards, pull their kids out of school and throw them into home-schools with biblically correct teachings. The result? More stupid Micro-madrassas in every home.

...it should be helping us to produce smarter students.... ...And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'"

Ten points to anyone who can identify who said that and when, without Googling it.

Didn't use Google but did see it mentioned on the web. Thank you for posting it, nice ray of intellectual honesty in this cesspool, but it'll get lost in the roar of those accusing fellow Dems of being right-wing-gun-owning-terrorists etc etc etc.

Getting harder by the day to comprehend the amount of hypocricy here, again, good point.

I'm glad Obama and his children are so much more mature, understanding of the element of racism, intelligent enough to not let people like this affect their words, actions and goals. The Obama family is truly a family to be admired. That lady is truly a racist idiot in the first degree. And I hope her child knows it.

146. and you think the MSM is only in it for the money?
Now some of these people have very ugly preconcieved ideas that continually are validated by some of the most vitriolic spewers on TV. Who owns the networks? What do they have to gain? They are huge corporations, some who have ties to other businesses, like war. Don't you think that it is in their best interest to catapult any propaganda to serve their interests? Yes, we can turn off the TV, but there are many Americans who actually believe that what's on the air equals the truth, because no way would a fair and balance network like Faux lie to us. The people that are being riled up, have been so by their own prejudices, but mainly by FEAR and fabrications. I have said again, the teabaggers should be very suspicious when a corporate network is pushing their agenda. Telling people where they can go protest. They don't get that they are tools for these corporations and the RW who promotes and does the bidding for these greedheads. These campaigns are artificially created, there is nothing grassroots about them. The repugs work their base FEAR and fabrications with the help of the MSM.

143. Insanity
There is a big stink about this in metro Columbus, a couple of suburban schools will not be participating because of so many calls from wing nut parents. One letter to the editor from a foamer said Obama should concentrate on his job and not waste time on this - though I assume he was fine when Dubya was struggling, in person at the school, to read (likely moving his lips as he did) 'My Pet Duck" as the Trade center was being hit.

I'm about at the point where maybe it would be best to give these folks a few red states and let then secede and be as nuts as they want as long as they want, maybe until the rapture or whatever they believe in, as long as they don't bother the rest of us who can wind America back to a real free non theocratic republic for the people.

I don't blame Big Ed for going nuclear on this last evening, presidents of both parties have been doing these kind of things for a long time and it's never been an issue. What's changed is this guy is black (well, half black), we have sociopaths like Rush and Beck permeating the airwaves, and these people are moving at light speed toward full blown psychosis.

I'm not much more than four hours from Canada and I'm starting to learn French, I'm going to keep my options open if the US keeps driving the bus off the cliff to the far right, what's going on is more than alarming.
