FDA says residue is frog or toad; how did it get in Pepsi can?

Amy DeNegri took pictures of the can in question right after her husband gagged on its contents.

(CNN) -- The "disgusting" blob that Fred DeNegri's wife says she poured out of his Diet Pepsi can was probably a gutted frog or toad, the Food and Drug Administration said.

DeNegri was grilling in his backyard tiki bar in Ormond Beach, Florida, when he popped open a can of Diet Pepsi, took a big gulp and started gagging, his wife, Amy, said.

He emptied out the can down a sink but something heavy remained inside. His wife took over and shook the can over a paper plate until something resembling "pink linguini" slid out, followed by "dark stuff," Amy DeNegri said.

"It was disgusting," said Amy DeNegri, 55. "And now, what started out as a normal afternoon in our tiki bar has blown up into this crazy thing."

2. That's the last time they'll drink anything out of a can!
Drinking out of a glass is so much more civilized.

(Yes, I still drink soda out of the can. I never said I was classy.)

9. They are, pretty much
This had to have contaminated that whole run of soda, falling into the vat during the mixing process and long before carbonation. It was probably sitting in the syrup itself, to have been so completely gelatinized.

Blech.

Face it, all processed food is a risk. Even unprocessed stuff that's straight from the field has acceptable limits of insect parts and rodent hair and feces. Nothing is completely pure.

21. Of course they're secure!
That can sure secured the frog remains until it was opened.

17. Watch out for the pies
There was a local bakery that used to do lots of business.

My aunts always loved telling the story about how one of them bought a blueberry pie and found a dead mouse in it. It actually got funnier each time they told it... :7

Oh, and glasses...look out for bugs climbing into them and drowning. I used to keep a glass of water bedside so I wouldn't have to make noise in the bathroom. One morning very early I woke up and took a sip of water and almost swallowed a rather large and disgusting insect that had decided to go wading without a lifeguard present. Drowned... glug glug. I woke up fast and spit it out, thank goodness.

Now I still keep a glass of water bedside, but it's got a cap and straw.

:)

18. The bedside water
My concern would be taking a big gulp of ants. They're gone for now (lurking in the walls) but you never know when they will make a huge reappearance.

23. Bugs in glasses...big hazard at outdoor gigs
I've had fruit flies and even a yellowjacket get into my Wild Turkey or Makers Mark, and I drink my bourbon neat (ie - room temp, no ice, just straight into the glass.) At one bar we play at they had to cover the pour spout on the Turkey because fruit flies were getting into the bottle through it! I ordered a pour of Turkey, and the glass was *full* of fruit flies. The bartender gasped and washed the glass and opened a new bottle. :D

22. Great movie...
Always feel compelled to point out the plot is VERY loosely based on Hamlet, with Bob & Doug sort of in the Rosencranz & Guildenstern roles (or maybe Horatio as they befriend the "Hamlet" character).

Everyone remembers the flying dog from Hamlet, right? And all the hockey?

15. Back in the early 80's...I worked on the line in a canning factory...
They canned peas.
I was among the last of the workers on both sides of the assembly belt that ran the produce into the big cooking vats below.
We all picked stuff out as fast as our arms could go (we were all being watched and it would be your job if you were to slow down)..and still..bugs and dirt clumps, unknown pieces and parts of other plants and all kinds of stuff went right on past us as the belts were full and moving very fast.
This doesn't even begin to match what went in where the guys worked down below at the vats themselves.
They did all kinds of stuff..from throwing in dead animals to spitting and urinating and who knows what all. It was all a big joke to the guys and they would brag about it.
I have never bought canned food since.

16. Hah! We used to get our frog guts for free!
Some years ago before we had a well dug, we got our water from a spring house about 150 feet up the hill. It had to be cleaned out twice a year...little critters got in, you know, along with sand and other stuff.

One year the hose leading down to the water tank in our house got blocked and we had to blow it back out the other way.

Wheeeee!!!!!!!! Frog parts and pieces flew every which way!!!

The really funny thing is, that water tasted damned good. Better than the well water, which turns everything brown from the minerals.
