Just in time for Christmas.. Pole Dancing Doll for the little girls

http://gizmodo.com/5348675/pole-dancer-doll-doesnt-really-set-the-perfect-role-model

It rotates. It has blinking lights, a disco ball, and a pole. And it's probably one of the wrongest toys you can give to any girl. Because, unlike the USB Pole Dancer, this one is actually for kids.

Pole Dance', a doll that appears to dance around a pole, has sparked outrage after a grainy photo hit the Internet.

Batteries and dollar bills not included.

A grainy Internet photo of an alleged new toy for girls has parents in a tizzy - "Pole Dance," a doll that, well, dances around a pole. Like a stripper.

In the photo, which first appeared on gadget blog Gizmodo.com, the box for the toy depicts a cherubic, brunette doll in a shiny green dress, clutching a pole with a disco ball on top while standing on a small stage that says "Pole Dancer."

The simple graphics on the box include the words "Style," "Flash" "Up and Down" "Go Round and Round" and "Music."

Whether or not it's a hoax or a sign of the apocalypse, posters on parenting Web site parentdish.com were aghast over the suggestive doll sending a horrible message to young girls.

"Can you say dieing (sic) civilization. NEXT!!," read one post. Said another: "It does look pretty real . but it just seems too over the top to be real! I just can't believe someone would go that far . well, then again, maybe I can."

A writer for Gizmodo.com told parentdish.com that the new doll is likely authentic - and probably came from Asia.

"As far as I can tell, it's a real product," said Gizmodo.com's Jesus Diaz. "It didn't seem Photoshopped to me. It feels more like the typical Chinese-made product you can only find in low cost stores."

4. well us prudes better fuckin keep our mouth shut cause after all, sexualizing
our 5 yr olds are just allowing them to express themselves in the most natural of ways

does it also have instructions on how to strip. and maybe a soundtrack of males yelling out the most vile and crude comments as the doll strips so she will feel well liked

just beyond disgusted

nope

just my problem.... the puritan nation we live in and all

can grow up to be sexy and dance and undress for men's entertainment. I'm sure someone here will bring that up--the "female empowerment" agrument.

30. A few years ago, my friend & I were at Mervyns
She had a 2nd grade daughter, so we always ended up looking at little girl clothes.. I was amazed at what choices there were..

To be fair, there were a lot of nice things, but there was ALSO a whole lot of really "sparkly" stuff too.. Little silver sequined tops with spandex pants & lacy BRA & pantie sets ..in sixe 6-x :wtf:.. there were even "fashion wigs" (not of the halloween variety)

Things have sure changed from the Carters & Health-tex days :(

49. I was in a Sears store a few years ago.
The checkout counter was by the pre-teen girls clothing section. There was a display of sparkly tee shirts on little girl mannequins. I remember the text on two of the shirts. "I'm a hot tamale" with a graphic of a hot pepper, & "I'm a sweet little cherry" with a sparkly red cherry. Who the hell would let their little girl wear something like that?

85. as poster says below, this allows our children to be comfortable in their sexuality
cause after all, without a pole dancing doll, or slutty little clothes, or porn, or or or

how else will a child embrace their sexuality in an age appropriate manner.

i guess it is either

give the children the adult sex world or give them nothing.

good old black and white, all or nothing thinking. no middle road in this world today

Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 04:08 PM by Berry Cool
If it reflected the greater part of reality, Divorced Barbie would come with a kid or two, three jobs to make ends meet, and a sporadic-at-best child support check from Ken, who would have already remarried to Tutti, started a second family with her and see no reason why he should have to go on paying for a "dead horse"...

Edited because at first I thought Ken would pick Midge for a second wife, but on second thought, she'd be too old. He'd marry Tutti.

...and a bottle of Dom Perignon she'll feign copulation (complete with Realistic Sounds®).

My sister bought one of these for her daughter and by the end of the year the toy had earned nearly $20,000.

56. I could point out that pole dancing is excellent exercise...
and a lot of fun.

Normally exercise is no fun, it's simply hard and boring.

Expecting to get flamed, I will post a link to a site that advocates pole dancing as exercise. (Note: no nudity.)

69. I don't pole dance...
I'm 63 and a candidate for a hip replacement and also have severe lower back problems. I have a difficult time walking. My exercise is limited to a recumbent stationary bike, a pull up bar and some dumbbells.

However, my daughter uses the pole for exercise. She also is good at yoga and loves to dance as a workout. She's 37 years old, 5 foot 2 inches tall and weights a hair less than 100 pounds. Admittedly she has good genes (from her mother side) but she's definitely in shape.

My two grandsons (age 15 and 14) work out with the pole, but their moves are mainly for strength training. One can hold himself at a 90 degree angle and 180 degrees on the pole for 30 seconds or more. Both grandsons have a blast using the pole and it helps them develop upper body strength. I installed a couple of pull-up bars in the door ways and they do pull ups every time they walk through the door as well as other exercises. They love computers, but they are in good physical shape.

67. This is really weird.
I have to wonder what the intent behind this is. As the article points out, this looks to be something sold at the dollar store and cheaply manufactured in China, which makes me wonder how much of this thing is a product of bad cultural and linguistic translation?

If so, it is just sadly bizarre. If not, it's just sick.

70. Not even remotely surprising
In the past decade we have seen the "tween" market explode and it has became culturally acceptable for pre-teen girls to sexualize themselves to a shocking degree.

79. Yes.. I just think it was only a matter of time
A lot of that "tween" stuff dribbles down to much younger girls. It wasn't that long ago that Barbie became controversial and Mattel adjusted her proportions. Instead of things improving, they have gotten far worse. Yes, dolls come in all different colors and their proportions are more realistic but the message is the same and far more sexual than Barbie's ever was.

82. I Would Never Have Given Something Like This
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:19 PM by On the Road
to my daughter when she was little.

Having said that, it looks inoffensive. As long as it's not overtly sexual, it doesn't have the same connotations to a child. It can even help them to deal with things that children in a more repressed environment might become neurotic about. Kids have to have a safe context to put adult things into. As long as it's not accompanied by the wrong kind of encouragement and appreciation, a toy like this shouldn't have any untoward effect.

My daughter used to love going to Marrakesh, a Morrocan restaurant in DC. We took my evangelical parents along once, and they were shocked when the belly dancer came out. My mother said "how are you going to explain this to Angie?" But there was no need -- Angie didn't see it on a sexual level just enjoyed the performance. She grew up sensible and much less repressed than I did.

(Note: After mystifying everyone in the thread on bloggers infiltrating message boards by misposting this reply, might as well put it where it belongs.)

Considering the cheap "toy" will probably break and be thrown in the closet after a day....this brainwashing lasts a lifetime.
