8. The story I heard initially was that the finger-biter was the teabagger,
the finger-loser the pro-reformer.

Does that change your opinion?

Since the media is reporting different versions of the story, I wouldn't jump so quick.

11. If the finger-loser was a pro-reformer
then he wouldn't be a massive hypocrite for accepting medicare to heal his wound. Also, I'm fairly sure that the pro-reformer wasn't the one who attacked first. If he was the one to attack first, then yes, that would change my opinion.

13. First hand account
This is the most comprehensive recounting of events so far: http://www.drumsnwhistles.com/2009/09/03/health-care-vigil-in-thousand-oaks-provocation-to-violent-response/

The blogger, who was at the protest with the pro-reform group, says she has handed over relevant evidence to the police.

I agree with her that whatever happened, nobody who involved comes out of this looking good.

15. That blogger gave an excellent account
of what she saw. The photo of those opposed shows only about 8 or 9 people. She says there over 150-200 pro-reform people there. That is probably what got orange shirt guy so angry. Now that people are on to the orchestration of these Townhall meetings, people who support reform are showing up and the Tea-bagger/birthers don't have the stage to themselves anymore.

The photo, (which shows orange-shirt guy) of the anti-healthcare group is pathetic. It is proof that a vast majority of people DO support healthcare reform.

As for their behavior, if someone pushes you into the street in front of moving traffic and has already threatened to do the same thing another person, and that someone then pokes his angry finger in your face, why would such a person whine like a baby when something happens to that finger which did not belong in anyone's face?

I have to admit, I have no sympathy for him if the blogger's report is accurate. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen orange-shirt guy.

16. On a minor technical point

If (...) someone then pokes his angry finger in your face

If you were going to poke an angry finger at someone, it certainly wouldn't be your pinkie finger. \

Well, almost certainly.

Seriously, there are limits to how much anyone can analyse events at such a remove, but my experience hear says 'very bad judgment' on the part of the biting person. I am unsympathetic.

edit: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hAkLGsyNutX4LzUQhcc2zUSHXqYgD9AG37B80 source for the fact of it being the pinkie finger, in case anyone was confused. I just noticed it's not in all versions of the story.

17. Well, when you are defending yourself
your aim isn't always the best. He may have aimed at the poking finger but in the heat of the moment, only managed to get the pinkie. Same thing can happen when a victim attempts to spray someone with mace, or shoot an attacker to defend themselves. They don't always hit their target in the middle of a fight.

If the finger biter intended to bite the actual finger that was poked in his face and missed, I think that still constitutes self-defense. he was just off in his aim a bit. And as it happens, his bad aim works out better for Mr. Rice. Better to keep your index finger intact if you have a choice, than your pinkie. He should be thankful for the finger biter's bad aim.

Bottom line, this guy had threatened another person, then punched the finger-biter in the face. If he is going to behave that way, he should not be whining when there are consequences to such aggressive behavior.

22. the finger bitee, himself says the finger got in the mouth on secondary or...
later punches during the scuffle. I suspect the bite-off may have been accidental.
If it wasn't accidental it is probably a felony compared to the misdemeanor punches.

Its definitely not self defense, either way - not if there was an avenue of escape.
