Update on the California domestic violence funding cut. |

Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 06:34 PM by ourbluenation
as some of you might already know, the Governor eliminated 100% of dv state funding this July with a line item veto. Saved the tax payer $16 million shared among 94 shelters.
Shelters in rural areas like mine are on the verge of closing if they haven't already. I've laid off staff, reduced everyone's hours, cut operations to the bone, and just read a thread about fed workers not getting as big of an increase as expected that made me wanna vomit. Not because I don't think they deserve an increase, but because in times like these I'm hard pressed to understand the inability by some to count their blessings. To add insult to injury, I watched Nicole Brown Simpson's sister who LIVES IN CALIFORNIA interviewed on Anderson Cooper last night to talk about DV and she didn't mention once that the governator of HER STATE, the most populated one in the country, cut all dv funding.
Anyways, there is a state senator here who has written a bill, sb 622, to get the funds restored by pulling from a Victims's Compensation fund that sitting on a surplus. The VC fund folks oppose this, understandably, apparently dv victims aren't "victimy" enough in some people's view to justify tapping into this fund. It's up for a vote today or tomorrow in the assembly and I'm on pins and needles waiting for word.
In addition, there have been lawsuits filed claiming that the line item veto is illegal and we should have word on that in the next few weeks. No doubt though that even if we win, he'll appeal.
Well there you go...an update. If you are so inclined and live in Cali, you know what to do.
Tired.
