...last year at around this time, the political scene seemed as hopeful as my life seemed depressing.

Now, it seems as if the exact opposite is true.

I am losing interest as well since everything is beyound my control. There is nothing I can do but add stress. I vote and give money to politicians for what? I will keep voting but my money is not going to politics any longer. I'm sure the homeless and the hungry will make better use of my donations.

We do not have the monetary influence needed to make CONgre$$ bend to our will to help people.
At this point, the best you can do is batten down the hatches and take care of your own and any others you can spare.

I'm not a Democrat AND my life is good. Sure, I have a cancer, my mother has alzheimers, my beloved cat is dying, my 65 next door neighbor suffered a sever head injury and his disabled girlfriend... my good friend... is looking at a decade or more of unrelenting work taking care of him, my daughter's best friend is anorexic and we are all at our wits end. Sometimes it is hard to remember that, just a few short years ago, my life wasn't cluttered with these worries. But then and now, politics... that which joins me to my fellow human beings, known and unknown, assholes or saints... doesn't change.

The personal is political and the Dems in Washington are not the be all and end all to democratic (small "d") politics and money is not the only game in town.
